The Witcher 3 for me. It's still one of the GOATs for the quality of it's side quests. It was such an enjoyable game

Elden Ring is one of the greatest achievements in open world games in history. The sheer amount of builds, freedom, secrets, challenges, sense of adventure, etc. is unparalleled. They took the concept of BotW and perfected it.

The Witcher 3 has great side content but that's all that's going for it. The main story is meh, and the combat is awful.

Yeah I'm looking for which one to put my time into. I'll probably go for Witcher 3 since it's like 6 dollars on Steam right now. Elden Ring would set me back a lot more.

For some reason I couldn't get into W3. Just didn't click with me. I absolutely love Elden Ring and I never played any of the previous games.

Beyond being open world, the two games are nothing alike.

W3 is very story focused, either through the main quest or the side-quest. There is a lot characters and dialog. For the most part I consider the story/writing to be really good, especially a lot of the sidequests and the DLC. And the world building is good, though it also has the benefit of being built on an entire book series (that you don't need to read, nor do you need to play the previous books). The combat is serviceable. It's not terribly deep or overly complex. Unless you start the game on the highest difficulty it's unlikely that you are going to die often.

Elden Ring, is story second. That's not to say the story isn't there but its delivery is very indirect. There are side-quest but they don't include much dialog and you have to track them yourself. The story is fine enough, but it is certainly not a game I would tell someone to play for the story. Where the game thrives is combat and exploration. The world is beautifully grotesque and begs you to explore it and combat is very involved. You have a lot of freedom in how you build it but regardless of what build you use, it's going to be hard. You'll die. A lot.

Others will disagree, so take this as "just one opinion". DkS3, Bloodborne, DkS1, DkS. DkS2 is a lot different from the other Souls games. Demons Souls started it all. There's also Sekiro which is kind of its own thing. Mix those in when you want something different.

The mechanics are slightly different in all of them but since you've already played ER, I listed them in an order that should be familiar for the skills you've already got.

Enjoy!
