I have a hard time staying focused in Text RP whereas with D&D it's usually in person and a lot more lively

That sounds like a personal problem, doesn't really explain why people prefer DnD on the whole

DnD and TTRPGs in general always feel more interpersonal, intimate and laid-back. I enjoy the game we play, the stories told and interacting with other humans. Feel like we can connect more in-person or on video call live, instead of being hidden behind a screen with all the time in the world to respond.

It sounds like you are more interesting in spending time with people? I'm talking just on a gaming level, as games.

You can have as many rules as you want in a text rpg. Not having to reply immediately is good for busy people and RPs don't need to be held at a specific time every week.

You can make maps for a text rpg too. Anything you do in DnD you can do with text, and in a more modular or customizable way too.

You can also do your own thing or do what the DM wants to to. The story is more open and doesn't depend on specific instances that need to be planned around.

Text rp community seems to be really into the EROTICA. Sucks because I do love collaborative writing like that.

Not always but I accept a lot of people like the romance element. You just need to find people who have your temperament and want to do the same things.

None of that is a flaw of the game idea itself, all flaws of individual players.

Except the tested rules etc I guess. But I think free-form is better because you can have your cake and eat it too.

As for the Mary Sue thing, I think complaints about that are hilarious. Mary Sues rule and are preferred irl

Text RP is for people who can't think well on the fly or adjust to things other people do and therefore need time to write walls of text to compensate for that

It is, objectively, for inferior minds

See how I misused "objective" on a totally "subjective" thing and shit on a bunch of strangers there?

It really doesn't though. If you have a mature group you won't wait more than the day to get your post. Not everything needs to happen in an exciting 2 hour session, which is a huge plus for me.

You can reply as fast as you want to though. And you can actually illustrate effort, something people love.

Patience is a virtue. Anyway it's completely normal to finish a thread in a day or two, if everyone wants to.

I've never actually tried DnD so idk of it has its own social issues.

You obviously have no clue how text RP works

You can travel to an entirely new country in one thread (go to airport, go on plane, get to other airport), can you do that in 2 minutes of DnD?

A thread is simply what you make it. Think of them as single DnD sessions that revolve around a single thing.

But obviously that's... obvious

I've done both. I prefer D&D to text rp because I like the game aspects of D&D and playing in person with other people. Free form doesn't interest me as much, even when I did text rp, I usually had ad-hoc game systems involved.

Text RPing is the isekai of the genre. It relies on everyone involved sticking to unwritten rules to be any good, but most of the time no one actually does and it's just a crappy power fantasy. That is fine for some people, but not really for the majority.

I remember being big into text RPing in high school... and looking back it's kind of a mess where everyone is trying to play the main character all once and not much of substance seems to ever get done...

I like D&D because of it's structure, clear sense of what's going on at any time, and the more collaborative it is with the whole party...

You can play without a power fantasy. That usually starts to happen when one player gets to be the main character and everyone wants to keep up, which is story mod bias at work

RP is more about the community than it is about the systems or mechanism. I don't play World of darkness because I've found that people that play world of darkness are people that I just don't get along with. I wouldn't play FATE because the system encourages people that I wouldn't get along with. Text RP tends to have people who want to have those power trips or mary sue characters. It doesn't mean that everyone is like that, but those settings have no structure to rein in players who are just.... too much. So it means the barrier against an unenjoyable experience is less prominent.

Right. It's more about which format you enjoy than one being objective better/worse than the other, imo.
