Say you're going to confront someone about getting too drunk at your parties so you do it around all your friends so they'll be less likely to try to make a shitty excuse for their behavior. If it were just you and them they could make up a bunch of b/s because you're the only person who's going to hear it and not take proper responsibility.

It's easier to win the argument that way but you are also stacking the deck.

I wouldn't call it cowardly, manipulative sounds better.

i would only do that if multiple one on one attempts failed. To do so outright works but youd have to accept that its for the most part a dick move and you run the risk of being perceived as such.
