Get to the training arena as quick as you can after the opening chapter, youll learn basic swordplay there and the game really opens up.

Yeah train with Bernard to unlock some combat abilities and train your skills up

archery will seem impossible at first but keep hunting rabbits and youll get the hang of it

and most importantly, when you have the option, always fight the priest

You can pick loads of flowers in the starting area to power level.

Plus knocking people out to power level stealth. Just dont get caught, because then you die.

100%

Also I just gave up on archery and started doing beginner side quests to get used to the mechanics and build up my character before doing more story quests.

But even I screwed up in some ways and struggled my ass off, until I had to put it down.

Flower power leveling for profit and potions and Bernard training day in day out until you can win in the dlc tourney held weekly assuming you have the dlc. If not, until you can hold your own with a large well equipped group of road bandits.

If you want high level gear raid the starting town, it has pretty much all of the good stuff and the enemies respawn.

  • Yes, getting proper sword training is tied to the story (mission four?), and until you get it, you fight just like a naive farm kid with zero skills and a target on their back -- everything is a life-and-death struggle and it's far better to avoid conflict entirely. Although some bandits do show up in the woods and such, many ambush sites are on the road, and if you're hoofing it, that may not be ideal.
  • IIRC, hard saving in this game requires Saviour Schnapps items that you can find or brew yourself. However, you can make autosaves when you rest in houses, unowned bedrolls, etc. There are a TON of these in the game, often on the edge of woodlands or something, and 99% remain unowned (usable) the whole campaign. Learn a few locations and the game is far easier.
  • Buy inn rooms when you can -- they cost 200 coins or something and act as permanent residences in certain cities. The difference between these and random bedrolls is that inn rooms come with a free stash chest, shared between all rooms, for the loot you want to save.
  • One way to get a lot of good armor, weapons, items (Schnapps, jerky, etc.) is to find fixed battlesites, wait for one party to clobber the other, then loot the corpses that remain. There are many in the world, but for speed's sake, make sure you have a mount to get you between sites and the nearest towns. The amount you sell to vendors increases their maximum gold, if memory serves, so your favorite loot buyer can buy even more in the future. If you plan on doing all quests, DLC, and so on, then you'll need a bunch of gold at some point.

The story might be kind of simple, but the setting, characters and writing do have a lot of charm. Once you've a grasp of the game's mechanics and can enjoy exploration for its own sake, definitely just roam around and have fun. Despite the game's occasional jankiness and other annoyances (the game definitely isn't optimized well, so it can take forever to load into saves), the quests are often very fun -- and that goes for the DLC, too. You'll certainly get addicted to farkle at some point, haha.

By the way, lockpicking in this game has been a big annoyance for many people. I recommend turning on the game option for simplified lockpicking and considering one of the analog sticks you turn (I think it's the right one) like a safe dial. As you move the left stick, hold the right between two fingers for precision maneuvering. Once you learn how to open chests like that, you'll rarely break any picks and the rest of the game'll be much easier. There are a few times in the game that can require burgling, so might as well get good at it. (You'll soon meet someone who can teach you about this a little more properly and can act as a fence for your ill-gotten gains.)

Yeah, maces and piercing damage heavy swords. Have to get through that armor and slashing is awful compared to crushing or pierce damage.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Training them is a little trickier though.

You can make a blunt training sword, but a training mace is just a mace.

Bernard is gonna shatter all of your shit over and over again.

I never really learned proper swordplay. I melee like it's Skyrim which doesn't work well, but if a guy is already bleeding to death from arrows or a stealth headshot kill I'm gonna win.

As others have mentioned actually training to get good at fighting is very important. If you try to just rough it without training you will die to basically anyone who isn't a common beggar.

You'll notice that when you are training that you do get beat up and healing is slow. Ask Bernard to show you how to do the fancy sword moves and it will auto-refill your health.

Chumps I'm Leshenko (sp?) is good for money and archery training.

Flower gathering is excellent for early game money, leveling, and strength.

Alchemy is extremely strong once you can do it. You'll be rolling in dough while also appreciating their variety of effects.

This isn't the kinda RPG where you can be like "I'm gonna be a lightly armored, agile Rouge". I mean you can be. And doing so will make you good at sneaking and assassination and what not. But if you are gonna be in combat, you want heavy armor. It is just better.

Seems like a much harder way to play the game.

Speaking of things you should put in saddlebags, find a shovel for when you encounter treasure map sites, graves, etc. You won't be able to dig up that stuff otherwise. The plot eventually gives you a free (mediocre) horse, but I forget if it comes with saddlebags of its own. Might be mixing up some horse knowledge with Witcher 3, haha.

BTW, you'll have ample opportunity to steal horses for free instead of buying them. However, I believe stolen horses have some kind of major downside (they don't come when you whistle, maybe?), so if you really want the good ones, you should shell out for one.

Reload if you can. The executioner (Herman?) is part of several sidequests, including one that's pretty damn funny.

I think I ended up killing him in the first playthrough because he's the executioner and they're usually posed as antagonists, but you'll find he's a rather sympathetic character. Plus, his VA always reminds me of Raiden (the one from the second movie).
