It dates back to the Middle Ages, when monks used glasses to study despite declining vision. Monks were learned fellows, and also this corresponded with another myth at the time that reading in dim light would damage your vision, thus the belief that someone who read all the time=worse vision.
Thus the more learned a man was, the worse his vision would be.

Also, glasses do extend the studying/researching lifetime of geniuses, as poor vision does not make for good experiments.
