Yet we lock them up in cages for our amusement. Hear me now and quote me later when I say society will look back and wonder how we could ever treat apes so poorly.

The problem is without zoos, it would be harder for people to feel a connection with animals which means less support for conservation. There are some shitty zoos out there that should not exist tho.

The Hominidae (/hmndi/), whose members are known as the great apes[note 1] or hominids (/hmndz/), are a taxonomic family of primates that includes eight extant species in four genera: Pongo (the Bornean, Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutan); Gorilla (the eastern and western gorilla); Pan (the chimpanzee and the bonobo); and Homo, of which only modern humans (Homo sapiens) remain.[1]

Chimps have always used stone tools (as in using a rock to smash nuts open). But I do remember a story where a group of chimpanzees were discovered to be using spears, which is an advancement that hadn't been seen before.

Why did you not quote for FIRST definition on there?

Also, why for your definition did you NOT include the part where it says "loosely"?

Why did you not quote for FIRST definition on there?

Because the first definition does not include the context that "ape" is a colloquial term and not a scientific taxon, limiting its use in establishing phylogeny. Saying that humans are apes is like saying chimpanzees are monkeys.

Ar0ge posted...
Also, why for your definition did you NOT include the part where it says "loosely"?

Because it matters not.

By the way, here's the taxonomy of humans:

And here's the taxonomy of a bonobo, something most people would consider an Ape.

And this is what's categorically considered an ape:
