Does the story matter that much? Ill probably watch some recap/spoiler videos for 2 and 3 if so.

They're all great so I recommend seeing them all, but story isn't important. All you need to know is that the whole world wants Wick dead.

Imo the 4th is the most dependent on the plot from the previous 3 movies so there's gonna be a lot of shit going on that's not going to make sense or character interactions that won't make any meaningful impact to you if you haven't seen 2 or 3.

1 was fairly tame compared to 2 and 3. Things really go insane at the end of 2. 3 is full on insanity. I have not seen 4. But basically the end of 2 set off this whole crazy plot line

Cool. I'm kind of tempted to just go in blind (except for the first movie). I'm not sure yet.

You will miss alot of world building from 2 and 3. 4 will still be a great action movie but you will appreciate it more knowing events for 2 and 3.

If you don't care at all about the story it'll still be a good action flick, but the plot won't make any sense to you if you skip the other 2 movies.

Ok, I'm pretty much caught up by watching these including the one for the first John Wick since I haven't seen it in forever:

https://youtu.be/ouX-Vb55lSU

https://youtu.be/w0hXkuaeUUo

It's really hard to suspend my disbelief at times, but I'm sure the movie will be fun. The story is kind of whatever. It's just double cross after double cross after double cross etc lol.

They are all good, but you aren't missing much from a plot perspective as the formula is "John mad, John kills a lot" each movie.

There's no real story--it's just a body count run from start to finish, and probably the biggest body count of any action movie I've ever seen...

Dangit, do I need to see these movies? I've always thought they were just pure action movies that people with shallow taste in movies flocked to simply because it was the newest action flick.

Even though I have a deeper appreciation for amazing plots than I do for action, I'm of the mindset that anything done really well can be considered great. That being said, am I missing out?

Not really. You first statement is fairly accurate. If you want the same style but with a more dynamic and interesting protagonist, try Nobody with Bob Odenkirk--I believe it's even made by some of the same people who made the Wick movies

While the plot of the John Wick movies may be bare bones and just a vehicle for him to kill people the actual filmmaking techniques are phenomenal. The cinematography and directing is extremely high quality and the stunt work is some of the best since the Hong Kong action films of the 90s.

yeah. the fight scenes are pretty great, and everything is really visually interesting. I rewatched the first three before seeing 4 in theatres. one thing that really stood out to me was how colourful they manage to be despite being (for the most part) very dark.

Keanu Reeves is great at movement and physical acting, though his line delivery is rather weak and stilted for the most part. fortunately there are supporting actors like Laurence Fishburne (who I would legitimately love to see as like, King Lear or something) to balance it out.

the long bird's-eye shot near the end of 4 might be my favourite single shot in the whole series

The movies are really good, but don't expect more than a basic plot. That said, the world building is actually really good, and each movie adds more lore.

Of course, the biggest strength of the series are the soundtrack and action scenes.

Not to mention great casts who all play their parts well.

I mean, they are just pure action movies but the choreography is fantastic. That's a big reason why I like them.

"Saw X is coming out. Do I have to watch the first 9?"

CE: Yes. There's a deep lore to the franchise, and it's important that you watch all 9 movies first.

You'd definitely be completely lost on the workings of the world and what is happening. I ended up watching 2 > 3 > 4 > 1 and I don't feel like I missed out on too much context, given the start of JW2 basically sums up his character.

Just go watch it. Dont listen to people that make you do homework to watch a fucking movie.

Most of the time when you tell people to do homework and that homework is long, theyll get turned off on the whole franchise. If you like 4 just go back and try the rest

The plot of 1-3 is so barebones, heres a summary: john wick is awesome assassin guy, some thugs kill his dog which sets him off on a long chain of murdering and now he has the whole assassin society against him

Telling somebody they should watch the previous movies isnt homework

he literally asked if he should watch them

were not saying go buy the comic books and play the video game

and John wicks lore is cool as fuck, thats half the reason I like the movies

Thats 7 hours of content. It is, especially if its a social event where his friends and family are going

Yes, ideally you should start a franchise from the start but dont feel you need to especially with a barebones story feanchise. This isnt game of thrones season 4 that needs seasons 1-3
