Got old, lost free time

I (fairly) recently replayed KH1, so Im still kinda there. Honestly I rarely ever finished replays of games besides Kingdom Hearts.

Less free time, they feel boring a 2nd time, and I've got too much shit I want to play I haven't tried yet.

I still love games, though.

Yeah when you could only afford a new game every couple of months and you had all the time of the world. Now I dont even bother with with sidequests or postgame content unless its something I really really like

I largely just work and force my extra energy into adult bullshit.

And then I wanna game but at that point I'm about as sharp as pudding and my attention span is awful.

Have money to buy more games as well as less time to play them. My backlog went from nonexistant to 100+ over the span of a couple years once I got a job, and now I'm just learning to only get games I know I'm going to play right away.

Got a job. Have money to buy all the stuff I want, as opposed to playing the 1-2 games Id get for a birthday or Christmas, and making them last for months.

Definitely a money thing when I was younger. I still do replay games pretty often but I put absurd amounts of time into a handful of games when I was a kid just because it was all I had.

Now I have money and have lots of games in my library but not much time to play.

Nowadays they're full of bugs and glitches.
Which makes them less enjoyable.

I just got off Diablo II, it's my "ol' reliable" game lol

Games are derivative of each other and the more you play the less wonderment there is to keep you engaged to go around.

Memory gets too sharp to be able do all that stuff over and not get bored.

Start a replay of an old game
get like, halfway through, maybe 3/4ths
forget about the game as you start the replay of another one
get through like halfway through that one
go back to the first game, forget where you were, start over
get like halfway through, remember you were playing Game B, go back to that

etc etc

Combination of less free time and more ability to obtain new games.

Games have always been full of bugs and glitches. At least now they can be patched out.

Add to the list that games have gotten very long lately. I get they're justifying the price, but sometimes there's multiple endings and things that require a large amount of time.

The opposite happens with me. I used to play a variety of games. Now the vast majority of the games I play are games I've played through already. I just played through Super Mario 64 for the 15th time. Donkey Kong Country for the 10th time. Donkey Kong Country 2 for the 10th time. And now I'm playing through Persona 3 for the 3rd time.

As someone who used to make video game lists, the new releases went from maybe 50/week to 250/week consistently, across all platforms. Granted most of these are garbage-tier early access on Steam.

Rune Factory happened fam. I play that shit in my dreams, ain't got no time for inferior games anymore. And all games not part of the RF series are inferior after all heheh.

I have the money to buy more than a few games a year now

I play mostly RPGs, they're getting longer, which makes it hard to do replays

I've replayed some PS1 games recently though since they're shorter

that was when i used to only get games on birthdays or christmas. now i get significantly more, and have less time

I still play the same games but they are GAAS type of games so they are always updated with new content.

I never replayed RPGs, with the exception of FFT. I generally replayed games because, like many, I had more free time and less games.

I don't replay games now because I'd rather a new experience; there are too many great games to bother replaying anything. Same with TV and movies.

Not sure what you mean. I developed other interests, I have a job, and I don't think playing a 40-80 hour JRPG is fun anymore, let alone 3 times. I also don't usually like playing a game multiple times in a row, it gets boring. So if I do play a game more than once, there are years between those playthroughs. And the more you replay a game, the more its flaws become apparent.

And then there's the fact that the video game industry has been making games longer and longer, and not interesting enough to bother finishing them because the entire game feels like an extended tutorial. Even trying to limit yourself and doing challenge runs isn't enough, because the game is fundamentally easy from the ground up, the game would have to be completely redesigned to be challenging. So why bother trying to replay a game like that? Better to just move on to another game, there's no shortage of games to play. There are still tons from past generations I haven't discovered yet.

Oh yeah you used to make the new release lists on TWSS. How long ago did you stop?

To add to your point, when we were younger during the 8/16/32 bit console generations, there were maybe 50 games released in an entire year across the major platforms. Things have just ramped up as time goes on and there's no way to make time to play all the worthwhile games.

I'd also say price point is a big thing. These crazy sales we see these days are relatively new. I first noticed it ~2011 with Portal 2. A few weeks after the game released, it went on sale for $30. That blew my mind. It used to take years for a game to have any sort of significant sale. These days if you wait 6 months, you can probably get it for 40% off. Now with the pricing during Steam and PSN sales, you can stock up on tons of games for cheap.

Games are getting too long to replay for me, not every big budget game needs to be a 25+ hours

I still do that.

Over the past year or so, the only 5 games I've played were replaying RDR2, GTAV, and the Arkham Trilogy.

Bold of you to assume that I dont still do that.

In fact, I often get annoyed with myself for revisiting old games instead of playing something new.

Play a new game or something Ive only played like once? Nah Ima play Arkham Asylum or Kingdom Hearts for the millionth time

I got a dumb obsession with buying games on sale and now have a backlog of hundreds of games, most I probably won't ever get to. I was broke and limited as a kid, so I burned through what I had a lot. I probably beat Streets of Rage 2 on Genesis a hundred times.

When I was younger, there were far less games to choose from to play, so you could reach a point where youd played everything.. Now there are so many damn games that its literally impossible to play them all. You cant keep up, let alone have time to just replay games. There is always something new to play

I still replay games. I'd rather replay a great game than play a new ok game.

I still do. Im on my fourth play through of Fire Emblem: Engage.
