Dad was so miserable and depressed, he wasnt someone I looked up to. My mom and sister were my role models.

Im thinking thats why I enjoy so many female hobbies like fashion, skin care, interior design, gardening, etc.

I had a second cousin on my mom s side who was the only cool adult guy I knew as a kid. Literally just met him 2-3 times as a kid though.

Those aren't "female hobbies."

Are you serious? Do you not know how much Ive been made fun of for being into girly hobbies? I understand theyre obviously not. There isnt a thing as gender assigned hobbies. But thats not what society perceives

No, never had anyone in my life outside my immediate family. So that just left dad and my older brother. Neither of which were role model material.

not really. even today i can't really relate to my dad i barely talk to him tbh. he seems like a better father figure to my younger sister and other family members. was surprised that some of my cousins hit him up on social media for advice and he'd speak to them for a couple hours wtf.

he was meaner when i was younger though tbf so i avoided him. something changed him in his late 30s/early 40s (he had me young). not sure what it was though.

So he straight up has the ability to be a father but for whatever odd reason chooses not to, and instead channels his fatherly duty elsewhere. My read is that he realized how to be a father too late in his life, and now itd be too awkward to change things with you so he copes by being a father figure to others.

just saw your edit. Yeah he definitely had a change of heart somewhere. Ever think of reaching out?

My dad was my hero , he is a 6'4 badass. Unfortunately he loved beer more than he loved his family so I didn't get a lot out of it. Maybe some tips on how not to be. He's still cool though.

My dad, sorta. Not as a general person (he divorced my Mom and started another family, after all), but because he was a cop.

Of course, I feel a bit differently about the police nowadays, but as a kid back then, I had a lot of respect for the police, and figured that was something cool about him. No idea if he was actually a good cop or anything, though.

Uncle is a millionaire who is philanthropic af. On Fridays, he closes his office and everyone works at the soup kitchen or Habitat for Humanity for the day. Before he got rich an was essentially living on the couch, he was famous for buying a new jacket every week because he'd give random people on the street his as he was walking around

Father was a physically intimidating dude and had a chaotic good nature to him. He'd constantly be the mediator between fueding people and stood up for people he thought were wronged. Had a quick tempter, but never did anything to anyone that didn't deserve it hence the chaotic good. His funeral filled a 600 person church and still had people standing

His best friend hired me for his side business when I was in high school. He had a great sense of humor and justice and was essentially the Batman at his work that dealt with severely disabled people. He was the reason many people would quit or get fired because he'd make it known if someone was being abusive or inadequate for the job.

There's a few others, but they werent that impactful

I think you are spot on TC. I'm kind of too nervous to reach out to him atm but it is a good idea

Not really. My dad isn't the best role model. He does have some good traits and loves me so at least there's that. I don't aspire to be like him, though.

lol no

My dad was the one with the feminine hobbies tbh. He grew plants and did sewing. I don't have feminine hobbies. Well except for gaming, the most feminine hobby of all.

That reminds me of my little 9 year old cousin that lives with me now. His parents were young, late teens when they had him. So I understand them not being ready to be a parent at that age, but now they're more d 20's. They both had the option of spending time with the kid, but they both refused. Like they wanted to forget he existed.

Anyway, the dad did in fact start spending a couple weekends with him each year. So things were looking to improve. But then his new gf got pregnant, and he told his son that he had to stop coming over because he was about to become a dad.

That pissed me right off. Imagine being told directly that he can't be a dad to you, because he's going to be a dad to someone else instead. Lost all respect for him then. The kid still idolizes his dad, even over all the broken promises and not seeing him for a year and being told that.
