you generally use someone's name when talking to other people about them; not when talking directly to them

yeah, that's what i'm saying. if i'm not talking to actual Joel I'm talking to someone else, giving you an endless array of names that probably aren't yours, making you like me less

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

there are very few scenarios where you actually have to use someone's name when talking directly to them. it's fairly common to greet someone with "hi Alice" or whatever but you can just as easily leave out their name because the name is implied.

similar to how someone's pronouns (he, she, they, etc.) are only relevant when you're talking to other people about that person; not when talking directly to that person. because "you" is generally used when talking directly to them

if you say "hi Alice" you're already accepting Alice as a possible world, iirc

"A possible world is a complete and consistent way the world is or could have been"

Most people I know use the person's name they are talking to or rather wanting to talk to as they say your name when trying to get your attention. Which is common in a work place.

Last week I literally spent what felt like 5 minutes getting this girl to breakdown and help me pronounce her name.

Some people just make nick names if they can't pronounce it. Like a shortened version of their name. For example I worked with a sterowski a lot of people just called her ski for the longest time.
