ye, grand seikos are cool too. you would rather have a GS over a rolex? a lot of GS are not true automatic movements though, they're like spring drive and stuff

What makes a watch the best watch? Its not about keeping time at this point because you dont use a watch to be incredibly accurate and we all carry phones.

So long as the watch doesnt break easily, that means its all about how it looks which is subjective.

I like what Seiko does with solar tech. Have a Solar Prospex that I just love. I get that people love the precision and engineering of Automatics (I have the Seiko Presage too) but just like solar better. Just my thing.

Rolex is like Mercedes-Benz. Or at least like MB used to be up until the early late 2000s.

They're really up there and they have some of the strongest brand power out there, they're status symbols by excellence.

But there are better brands out there, both from a quality and reputation perspective (and more expensive too), such as Patek Philppe and Audemars Piguet (just like there are Rolls Royce and Bentleys)

I'd argue it is still a true automatic, all the energy is being produced by your movement, it is just regulated through quartz.

Yes but no.

I mean, they are a waste of money. A $10 casio can tell the time better. Your phone will give you the time for free.

But are ferraris, lambos, etc a waste of money? Yes. Is jewelry a waste of money? Yes. Are brand clothing a waste of money? Yes. It's the same thing.

People could all drive $10k toyotas, wear $20 wal mart brand shirts, and have $10 casios... but not everybody does.

Even though they are flex cars, they are still cars that help you move to point a to point b. Everyone got a phone now, so a rolex is just a roflex

No need to spend 300k in a 2 seat lambo when a 15k toyota will do the trick. A $10 casio tells the time, so does a $20k rolex

someone who can afford one of those can also afford the other, and will most likely have both.

But also, some things are more expensive than others. $10 is cheap for a watch, but it's "don't touch that with a 6 foot pole" territory for a car.

a 10k watch is expensive, very much so. Rolex territory. a 10k car is cheap as fuck.

there may be 300k watches, but 300k for a watch is insane. The watch equivalent to a 300k car is probably, IDK, 40k

the watch

were you expecting that response? lol

Here is my reasoning: a 40k watch will retain resale value, or even go up, for decades, a car will depreciate. No property tax on watches. a 40k watch is a panty dropper, and it's always on your wrist.

the 300k watch. I would sell it for 300k, or even for 280k, then buy a 180k car (that's already impressive enough at 180k!), a 50k watch, and keep 60k in the bank, perhaps invest them in a REIT so I am earning 500$ per month FOR FREE after 10 years

why do people like GS so much?

I love their innovative and beautiful dials (eg snow dial, bamboo dial) and some of the technology behind them is pretty cool.

But they're still seikos, it's like buying a really expensive toyota. In a world with Omegas, Cartiers, or maybe even Tag Heuers, why go for a super seiko?

in the early 90s Honda released the NSX, a 6 cylinder mid engine super car that could beat Ferraris and Lambos for a fraction of the price. It was precisely designed and manufactured to offer speed, performance, and reliability like has never been seen. They have remained an icon to this day.

on rolex vs GS.

I don't think people understand how much goes into a Rolex, or even an Omega.

Think about one of those old school, not-too-flashy datejust stainless steel watches:

https://www.rolex.com/en-us/watches/datejust/m126234-0051

The fluted bezel is *always* finished in gold. Even the stainless steel models have white gold fluted bezels, always. Rolex doesn't even make a big deal out of it and bring attention to it, and they call these watches "datejust stainless steel"

The "sunburst" finish, that seems so normal now, even cliche? It's the result of micro-brushing, the light pattern is actually caused by micro-grooves reflecting the light.

Other stuff not seen in this page, and which apply to ALL datejusts:

the lume? It's actually "super luminova", highly superior to any other lume in the industry.

their steel? The industry standard stainless steel is 316L.You may see some watch brands refer to 316L as surgical grade steel or marine grade steel. But rolex uses 904L, it's leaps and bounds above the rest of the industry.it takes a higher polish than other grades of steel and provides greater corrosion resistance.

Rolex has its own gold foundry (!!!) and used gold of a higher grade than the rest of the industry. The also have a type of gold called everose that doesn't loose luster.

This goes way beyond your usual "stainless steel watch with a cool dial and a good movement" (e.g. Grand Seiko)
