I thought it held up pretty well. It's not like bad CGI is something modern anime fans aren't used to.

I liked the 1st stage original run quite a bit when I watched recently. Things are outdated but everything else holds up.

Modern anime's biggest problem is the budget is being heavily stifled by some stupidly outdated system. So the older animes tend to have this raw-ness to them that feels more real with less quality on the drawing.

The cars don't really hold up though lol but I'm sure it was mindblowing back in the days

The scary part is that there are probably people out there that think that Initial D's CGI is even in the same universe as modern CGI in terms of quality. Beyond the remade scenes, of course.

Sadly, the specs of the cars for back in the late 1990's are mundane compared to everything we can have access to IRL right now.

https://initiald.fandom.com/wiki/Takumi_Fujiwara%27s_Toyota_AE86#Specs

150 hp & 240 hp was something special back in the late 1990's

Now-a-days, you have average Sedan's that can have that kind of engine hp.

The amount of automotive tech that has progressed is mind boggling compared to what they were dealing with at that time.

Is this a real post?

Maybe if you are talking about a civic or something look at some of the cars from the 60s for gods sake that could lay rubber in four gears and had 360-400hp.

HP ratings back then are gross rather than net, they would have much lower modern numbers.

What was your fuel efficiency at 360-400 hp compared to the same modern engines that can pull the same #'s?

Most vehicles were also made mostly of steel back then, they weren't as light weight as they are now.

Most of those #'s are at the measured at the crank back then.

The amount of actual HP they delivered to the wheels were less efficient compared to what we have now.

There's alot of engineering that goes into modern vehicles to make delivering actual wHP efficiently

Eh, weights were pretty similar back then to today. A first gen mustang is under 3000 pounds, first gen camaros around 3200, 68 gto was about 3500, 71 cuda was 3400, 68 charger 3600.

current mustang is 3500-3800
current camaro - 3300- 4100 (daaaaaaamn)
charger - 3900 - 4600

we got chonky boys these days. 80s and 90s were lighter. Been getting heavier since some point in the 90s.

The reason why most cars are heavy is due to safety standards, some cars like the Miata have remained lightweight due to excellent engineering.

Every top 90's Japanese sports car was making over 300 hp, the 276 reported was a gentleman's agreement between the manufacturers that was constantly broken.

90's Corvettes were making 300-375 hp depending on model.

IDK what you're talking about that 150 hp is a lot in the 90's.

Manufacturers are still advertising crank hp, the only time you get wheel hp is when someone goes to a dyno.

Not everybody had that kind of money to buy top of the line sports cars.

Especially the characters in Initial D.

Many of them are poor and have to have upgrades to baseline vehicles.

Where as only a few that were rich could afford things like the RX-7 line of vehicles that the Takahashi brothers drove.

Sure, but in the show they even mention that the 86 is older and not considered fast by any metrics. The whole point of the show is car feel, handling, and driver skill over raw speed.

True, the only reason the 86 performs as well as it does is because of Takumi Fujiwara's dad Bunta upgrading the crap out of it for his personal enjoyment and letting Takumi drive it for work / Tofu delivery.

https://mymodernmet.com/ross-chastain-wall-move-nascar/

Crazy moves similar to Takumi's Gutter Technique like the Wall ride was done recently by a NASCAR driver.

It literally led him to victory from guranteed defeat.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3lU71Qg9yI

It caused some body damage, but that's a small price to pay to make it to the podium.

The entire world was going bonkers over it.

Do / would any of you read a book about street racing? I have a story I want to write that is loosely based my friends and I that were into what we called "rural road racing".

We lived in a rural area with lots of old twisty windy roads that were all but abandoned. Old timber companies, coal plants, and just areas that were basically abandoned tiny towns, state and national forest roads, etc. Mixed of paved and gravel roads.

Takes place in high school, starts 1998. Main character buys a Nissan NX2000 when he turns 16 a couple of days after finishing freshman year. He and his friend spend the next 2 months mapping and charting all of the "tracks" to start the series. Creates a website that starts gaining traction by kids sharing it on AIM. Has main character bragging about being the best road racer of all time with times and descriptions of the track and taking on all challengers.

School starts, kids call bullshit on everything. Kids with high HP cars were claiming it was impossible, on these 3-5 mile tracks, couldn't get within 20 seconds.

So series of races over 3 days and some low value betting happens. First against a 1985 monte carlo SS, 82 Camaro, and a 83 Mustang GT. These cars were mostly stock, the monte carlo had an exhaust and headers. Everyone was running just whatever was stock or cheap at Les Schwab. MC sweeps the races. Races are done best of 3, starts on a short straight away.

race rules were first race, challenger leads. No passing until after first turn. In order to win, has to be ahead by 3 car lengths. Second race, champion leads. No passing until after first turn. Has to win by 2 car lengths. Third race, if needed, starts head to head. Whoever wins, wins.

At this point the rich kid with a 94 mistubishi 3000gt VR4 starts talking mad shit but he won't race. his dad would kick his ass if he found out he was racing. of course none of the kids know that to start.

Some of teh original contenders are keeping on racing and doing upgrades (bolt ons). The monte carlo is always something of a joke competitor but he comes back a few times to be outlcassed and outdriven. camaro guy eventually drops out, foxbody guy always a good driver and becomes friends with MC.

crown vic, ford taurus SHO, 240SX, all beaten.

Then kid buys a 93 Eclipse GSX, AWD Turbo. He starts talking mad shit, saying he just needs a few months. Him and his buddy (240SX guy) start running the courses, mapping stuff.

Finally, show down. GSX vs NX2000. GSX wins first race, NX2000 wins 2nd race, GSX wins third race. First time there is a third race, too (would maybe change this for story purposes). First race that MC attempts to make a pass in a race. He succeeds, but GSX manages to pass him on 2nd to last corner.

This then starts an arms race between GSX and NX2000 for a while. NX2000 gets a 2nd set of tires, max performance summer tires. GSX ups his boost. NX2000 does exhaust and vehicle lightening (name, takes off the hood for race day), puts on some strut bar and beefier rear sway bar, upgrades suspension. GSX ups his boost and gets new tires.

Other challengers come in here and there but only GSX trades wins with him, depending on the course and car configuration.

Eventually this all gets big, there are multiple races per day, there are backets, different divisions (hoopties, regular car, fast car, small truck (SUV), big truck (SUV). Jeep Comanche becomes a big challenger for some courses that are gravel forest roads. Time trials are being done, 30-50 cars are showing up. Even with few people using these roads, they start pissing off the local home owners.

Summer after Sophomore year for MC, county sheriff bust up the road racing. In order to escape the long arms of the law, MC, his friend 80 c10, 83 mustang, comanche, 240sx and GSX all strip down to their underwear, a couple have their clothes in a bag, most are using their pants as bags for their clothes. Swim down river past sheriff, come to Comanche's house, get 2 canoes, march back to where the cars are parked as tow trucks are showing up and cars are being impounded. They were somehow able to convince the sheriff that there cars were parked in the public spaces because they were canoeing and leave no consequences.

That's about where the first story would end.

Would a story based on all of that as the framework and various teen drama, romance, nostalgia about cars and technology, would that be something you might read?
