I mean is it really Sony's fault Japan is so xenophobic. MS tried in the 360 era to secure a lot of exclusive JRPGs.

The Microsoft/Sega saga during the development of the original Xbox is a master class in xenophobia in tech, as well as Japanese tech companies being out of touch with reality

I'm just lost here.

You could give xboxs away in japan and they wouldn't sell as good as Sony.

Dragon Quest XII and MH6 could be exclusive and it still wouldn't do anything.

Sega inadvertently fucked up the original Xbox's popularity in Japan. When the OG Xbox was being developed MS and Sega were entertaining the idea of a partnership where the Xbox would be heavily associated with Sega's branding and IP and backwards-compatible with most of the Dreamcast library.

Despite Sega bleeding money and being forced out of the hardware business, Sega demanded that not only every online-capable Dreamcast game be supported through (what would become) Xbox Live, but every Dreamcast game with multiplayer in general be somehow compatible with the service. This was towards the ass end of the meetings and negotiations. Microsoft wanted nothing to do with that and the only thing that came from the partnership was a small amount of exclusives earlier in the Xbox's lifespan.

Microsoft was banking on that to leverage popularity in Japan until Sega started making borderline impossible demands. Microsoft's also at fault for putting all of their eggs in one basket, though.
