I took Japanese in a community college when that movie came out. My teacher once went on a long rant to the class about how much she hated that movie. Apparently its riddled with historical lies. She was very pissed off about it

I don't remember what my teacher said exactly but I think it had to do with the American main character never doing most or any of the things he does in the movie. I think she said a Japanese man did those things but the movie gives credit to an American. And that was why she was angry

People still don't realize "samurai" in "The Last Samurai" is plural in tyool 2023

it was actually a French guy, but like the other said thats stupid to get mad about cause its not supposed to be a historical retelling.

Even back then, I thought the ninja attack was hilariously stupid. They weren't even a thing by that point in history, they didn't actually look or operate like that, and it made zero sense for the Japanese government - who was trying to shift away from aging Japanese traditions - to send ninjas.
