Signed up with Nintendo at the turn of the millennium and made two well-regarded games on Gamecube (Eternal Darkness and MGS: The Twin Snakes), only for its CEO Denis Dyack to burn their bridges with Nintendo once he saw how underpowered the Wii was compared to the PS3 and X360. Finally released Dyack's passion project, Too Human, after a decade of on-and-off development, only for the game to fail to impress both critically and commercially, and then it was found that SK had stolen code from Unreal Engine 3 to create Too Human and their next/final game X-Men: Destiny, where a court order made them recall and destroy all unsold copies of those two games and pay $9 million in damages to Epic Games, ultimately culminating in SK's closure.

I wonder if they'd still be around if Dyack swallowed his pride--probably a hard thing for him, considering his reputation--and stuck with Nintendo?

Maxis, or whatever the studio was that made the last Sim City game. Suicided themselves with tons of input that could have changed the outcome.

Rare is mostly responsible for their downfall. Microsoft gets the blame, but they had controlling and strict management issues going back to the N64 days. And then those same heads at Rare had creative control over the projects once they started developing on Xbox, not Microsoft.

Telltale would be good comparable answer but nothing really gets quite as "controversial" as SK. Maybe Lionhead Studios too

Yeah, he was a nut and it was pretty clear that without Nintendo at the reins, Dyack's ego went out-of-check, which more than likely also contributed to their demise.

Yeah, Sega managed to start turning things around with Dreamcast. It wasn't a flop, but the Saturn was, and it was too little too late by then.

On paper, Silicon Knights is kind of hard to beat. How many companies can say they have been ruined by a game that was a commercial and critical flop AND somehow has stolen code in it to bankrupt them in court?
