That's actually one of the best reasons to have a Steam Deck. You don't need a PC to play games on it. Just a steam account and an internet connection.

I have a super old computer I got when Diablo 3 released. I got the steam deck so I could play some of the stream games I couldn't otherwise

It's nice to come in having a big Steam library, but it's not required at all.

If you want, you can just install Windows on it and only use GOG games. You can even change the startup screen to make it GOG based.

You don't even need to go that far. Just install heroic launcher

You can use it as a portable PC if you have a monitor (or TV that accepts the right input).
It is charged by USB-C, if you use a USB-C hub with HDMI you could use it like a PC if you had a keyboard and mouse even a bluetooth one

Pre-built PCs are overpriced compared to the Deck as far gaming hardware goes.

And most non-game stuff can be handled on smart devices at this point.

It's not an iPhone lol
It's just a computer. You remove the OS and install whatever.

wait you can do this on a steamdeck? do you have to jailbreak or do anything shady?

There's nothing to jailbreak, you can do whatever you want with a Steam Deck out of the box. Valve even provides drivers for people who just replace SteamOS with Windows.

steam deck appealed to me till my bro bought one and i saw the size in person. fuck no id rather just stick to a switch for portability. but maybe just me. the only game i'd want to try on the deck is dmc 3 se ubisoft port w/ the style switch and inertia mod but its not really a game i play too much these days. just a quick 30 minute session every other day or so. not worth spending a few hundred for that experience.

My other non steam games have taken over mine. Epic/gog/other...

Its a great backlog player. Yes i play in 20-35min sessions. I dock for the times i play rpgs or rdr2. I go back & forth statelines every so often. So, having the dock and setting up a gaming console when im not home is fun.

My i7-4790k gaming computer from 2015 i built for witcher3, has been down for almost 2 years and i dont even have a running OS on it. I have 4 ssds and a rx5700xt to use on my next pc build.

My pc gaming is from this steam deck and a docked 1070gtx laptop from 2017.

Frankly, i dont play enough of my backlog yet.

Do you want a PC as well - as in for non gaming PC tasks - or is it just to game on?

If you just want it for gaming, or if you plan on getting a powerful desktop PC or similar anyway, go for the Deck. If you want something that can be both a handheld gaming devices and a PC in one, while the Deck can do this with some customization, Ayaneo would be a better pick due to officially supporting Windows and the higher specs.

I think it would be wiser to put that money towards a PC, but I say that as someone who doesn't have a Steam Deck.

mainly because

What would TC need a non Steam Deck computer for? I don't have one, but I could imagine it replacing my PC, which I basically just use for gaming. If TC needed to do something that they couldn't easily do with their phone/tablet (doing a lot of typing or working on a spreadsheet), they could just use their Deck with a dock. I'd be interested to hear if you think there are certain tasks that TC will specifically need a computer for.
