Yeah, basically, Robert Smith intentionally lowered the ticket prices for their shows, and Ticketmaster deliberately added additional surcharges that were way higher than their usual service fee to bump it up to be the standard concert pricing.

Problem is, a lot of venues are tied to Ticketmaster distributing their tickets.

So, a band can't just say "We're playing Madison Square Garden, and doing our own ticket distribution".

Now, there are alternatives in a place like New York City. I know Barclays Center isn't exclusively tied to Ticketmaster, as the Brooklyn Nets tickets are exclusively through SeatGeek, but there's cities that only have one arena.

So it's either sell through Ticketmaster, or don't play that city.

Was kinda in the same boat when Rage Against the Machine decided to tour again. They did a few nights at MSG and I thought "It's literally been 27 years since I've seen them in concert, I got my 19 year old nephew into them, and this may be the only/last time I can take him to see them".

Live Nation owns a high enough percentage of the venues that acts of The Cures size can play, that they functionally are the only ticketing company they can use to sell their tickets

why do you think theyre using Ticketmaster at all? They are essentially forced to choose between not touring the US at all or using Ticketmaster

The reason a lot of bands can't sell their own tickets is because the infrastructure it takes to handle that amount of internet traffic is huge. Sure, a band like Muse can probably foot the bill, but artists who only sell out 1000/2000 people venues would lose too much money that it's not worth it to them.

I'm not saying Ticketmaster is good or anything (I was 100% behind Eddie Vedder's mohawk), but they are a known commodity that makes it easier on the artists without them losing money, so of course most bands will follow the pay to play model already set out.
