The games are still awesome but the console never starts up correctly and even a small bump can crash your game.

The SNES though still holds up incredibly well however.

You have to replace the 72-pin connector in the NES. The stock ones went bad, but the $12 i replaced mine with in 2005 is still going strong.

It's incredibly easy to do, and you only need a screwdriver (before all the weird hex driver shit).

You should replace yours!

also you should clean the game pins with alcohol. they only tell you not to do that because it WORKS and they wanted you to buy their cleaning kit.

From what I've seen, the late release top loader NES consoles are sought after because of the original's cart slot design.

So does blowing on your game actually work too?

Not really. It's more that you took the cart out and put it back in. Carts don't work when there is dirt either on the cart pins or the cart slot pins. A qtip with some alcohol is the best method to clean them.

No, that actually corrodes things further because of the saliva that comes out with your breath

It sorta works. People talking about "corrosion" are wrong. My games have been in 100% humidity Louisiana since 1990 and still work. It's silicon and copper; your breathe moisture isn't going to fuck it up.

Blowing dislodges dust, which _can_ be the problem.

Overall, blowing doesnt do that much either way. Cleaning with a q-tip and alcohol (or windex, as the ammonia works as well) is the 100% way to get a game to work.
