it seems more like it was meant to be a matter of perspective, which is later emphasized in the sequel, where he could have been right or wrong depending on the person.

To clarify, the cold opens in the first couple of episodes was to indicate just how hopeless the idea of a vaccine/cure is to underscore just how monumental Ellie's immunity is. It was not meant to make you think that no cure or vaccine could be developed because, all else aside, the ending is drastically worsened if there was no chance of it ever happening.

But that's neither here nor there because nothing in your post is actually a point Joel ever made before murdering the Fireflies, so it's all completely irrelevant.

Its been other people who have consistently robbed Joel of his loved ones and caused him such misery.

I disagree with this. I think the writing is better if a cure isn't really feasible. All the Fireflies are just clinging on to something because they have to in the bleak and depressing world they're in, like how Ellie is clinging to her immunity meaning something, and by the end of the story Joel is clinging to Ellie.

The Fireflies also just need something to keep them going.
