8K isn't here yet, at least not in dominant form. Is it better/more complete ray tracing? 60 FPS 4K? What is the incentive?

Load times.

Rift Apart is the only game I've played that takes huge advantage of it, but the way it seamlessly swaps between entirely different levels is impressive.

Load times and 120/60 fps patches and upgrades. Literally cant go back to 30 now for anything pc gamers arent lying about how much better it is.

8K would only benefit VR at this point.
Let's put more emphasis on raytracing everything.

Games that actually can't be released on older gens. The old hardware is really holding the quality of new games back.

They have that now, it's called "PC".

Meanwhile, the console market doesn't seem to care.

There is no incentive. They are already struggling with price increases. Microsoft released the Series S expecting the Series X to be the premium model for the entire generation.

These games as is are also still incredibly demanding for PC hardware.

Current target seems to be 4k 60 fps i think.

A lot of games don't even hit that native 4k 60 fps on console tho. Res seems to hover between 1440p to 4k for aaa titles.

I wonder how dlss on Nvidia gpus fare to the upscaling that consoles use. I have a computer that is 2 generations behind the current pcs so I have to use dlss w/ quality setting at 4k (becomes 1440p upscaling to 4k) and some other mild adjustments in presets to hit 60 fps for current aaa titles that offer dlss. Looks blurry till I move the sharpening slider to around 0.5. This is on a 55 inch TV. id imagine for monitors not as much sharpening needed and larger TV needs more sharpening. Dlss with sharpening id say looks better than native 4k with taa but not better than native 4k without any anti aliasing and 4k dlaa.

Then why is my CPU (AMD RYZEN 9 7900X) utilization only at 1% when playing new games.
The GPU (7900XTX) load is much higher tho @ 60%
It's almost like the gpu is doing all the work and the cpu is doing nothing.

So perhaps a separate gpu in consoles will force devs to utilize them both. And then I can use my whole PC.

Eh, recent PS5 sales now that people are actually starting to find them tells us that people definitely care to a certain extent.

It wasn't that most gamers did not care much for the new consoles....they just couldn't actually find them until recently.

To answer the topic, for me SSD load times by default and having more opportunities to choose between whether you prefer the game to focus on resolution or performance has been the biggest incentives for the current generation of consoles. The resolution performance options may possibly slow down during the mid and late points of the current generation since devs might fall back to the old pushing graphics/eye candy as much as possible ways (and certain games with jank performance like gotham knights and plague tale requiem only having a 30fps option could pop up more and more), but for now I am enjoying the options we currently have.

Probably because your CPU is around the same price as an entire new console.

But it also depends on the game. A Plague Tale Requiem and Gotham Knights push the CPU a lot more being next gen only games.

I don't think 8K will ever be the goal. Hell, it isn't even the goal for movies and TV.
