I see that comment (or variations of it) pop up a lot when people talk about media, and I can't wrap my head around it.

Why does someone want to hate something before going to see/read it?

Perhaps they hope to bond with others through shared contempt and disappointment.

Its part of what I call fandom brain rot culture. And its such an unhealthy way to live.

I think it's just a saying. They're basically saying "I went in thinking negatively of this and it ended up changing my opinion on it"

About a year or two ago i bought a product that was often shilled on a few of the forums i visit outside of gamefaqs. Thought it'd be trash because its measurements didn't align with what I perceived was good at the time. Eventually the constant hype over the course of a year or so rose my curiosity high enough to buy the damn thing. I was hoping it was actually trash just so I can start talking crap to all the shills. To me I need to have experienced something first before I start hating. So I was holding off for a while.

The product ended up not being bad tbh. Quite pleasing imo. Made me reevaluate my view on product measurements a bit. What i consider a good measuring products is a bit different from a year or two ago. That said I have bought a few other products that were just as trash as I thought they'd be based on their measurements so the above example was mostly just a fluke tbh.

I dont feel bad hating on things that I have experienced. It gives me a bit of an adrenaline rush tbh. I don't have many outlets (outside of mind altering substances) that give me a dopamine rush. so i consider hating to be a healthy recreational activity.. it has helped me stay sober for over 10 months now.. my year anniversary is on May 10 or 11th 2023.

I think they're just trying to make the point as to how good it really is, especially to people that may not be interested in it
