Gameplay didn't look beyond the scope of any mediocre game I already played on PS2, and "look at how inclusive we are - and we also say 'shit' sometimes!" doesn't make that any more appealing.

What's really tragic is that the promotional art and stuff is truly beautiful...Just look at this:

It's really pretty to look at. She's cloaked by magic, and she has this look of somber determination. She comes across as mysterious, graceful, and regal.

Then we see footage with dialogue and we realize she's a generic, unlikeable teenager with obnoxious characterization and basically no redeeming qualities. The mood of the art and marketing does not match the game or its lead character whatsoever. And the gameplay itself is standard-fare open world shenanigans.

I would have been tempted to play it based on that marketing image alone, if I hadn't seen anything else about the game before it released. Thank God for the internet. Saved me sixty dollars.

Edit: Sorry, just checked Steam. It saved me seventy dollars.

I am sure it's out there, but I don't know a single person who criticized the game because it had a black lead character. Not everything is about race folks.

*edit* Blargh that probably sounds insensitive, but it's just not a criticism I saw. "Woke" sure I saw that one of course.

Biggest problem with a lot of single player games these days. I've been playing through Dragon Age II, Inquisition, and Origins/Awakening with my gf lately...In that order. We just finished Inquisition last night and started Origins today.

Going from an open world checklist extravaganza with a mission table and a bunch of random filler quests back to a somewhat more linear, condensed game with a heavy focus on telling a well-paced story...man, it feels so nice. I wish all games understood how to pace themselves.

Because 2 is her favorite and is mostly its own thing with some references to Origins. I've never played any of them before this, but she loves the series and wanted to get me into the story. Originally we were just going to play 2 and Inquisition because she's excited about Dreadwolf and those two are pretty closely linked by story threads. (Red Lyrium, and such)

As we got closer to the end of Inquisition we decided we might as well play Origins, too, just so I'm all caught up on the story and all the context.

Because she liked it the most. I'm with her so far. Inquisition was a lot of fun and I liked the characters (especially Iron Bull and Cole), but boy did it feel bogged down with tons of filler and open-world bullshit. 2 felt a lot more focused and straightforward. A vehicle for telling a story, not a deliberate time-waster. The older I get, the more I appreciate games with good pacing and less filler.

For what it's worth, Square says this about basically every game that isn't FF. They were disappointed by the Tomb Raider reboot, by Hitman 2016, by Guardians of the Galaxy. They consistently set absurdly high expectations for their western studios and then voice disapproval when those aren't reached.

Square releases too many games within a small timeframe. I still haven't bought Diofield Chronicles or Valkyrie Elysium because Star Ocean 6 and Tactics Ogre took up so much of my free time. Then, Crisis Core Reunion came out soon after. I haven't bought Octopath Traveler II yet despite enjoying the first game.

I hated what they said with Bravely Default. The president of the company said he was shocked at how well a turn based RPG sold, and they should start doing more of that in the future since it seems to please the fans. Then they never followed up on in and kept releasing their weird pseudo action turn-based games.
