Grab new weapon
Use weapon and eventually master its ability
Repeat

Every time you get new gear, your ability pool grows.

Far better than boring ass skill trees

"Congratulations, you earned enough points for ATK + 2. In 3 level ups, you have the choice between an ability that might suck, or MAX HP +2%"

You left off the part where you found a new, better weapon/armor with another new ability while you're still only halfway to learning the ability on your current gear, which happens a hell of a lot in those types of games.
