All those movies about black soldiers fighting overseas during ww2 shows them hooking up with hot white French/German girls and being friendly with the locals.

Then it cuts to America and all the racism, Jim crow type laws and general misery of those states for black people and how they were treated by the white people in charge.

But it makes no sense because those Americans are Europeans, or at least they were former Europeans up until 100 years ago or less. So the same racism or lack thereof should have been present back then but it wasn't why.

europe was absolutely racist in WW2-era (and still very much is today) but that racism manifested differently than in the US. my guess is that black americans who fought in the war were accustomed to american-style racism and didn't really recognize the ways it manifested in europe

Besides some interesting videos he's shared, those are the usual quality of his topics.

I don't think using soldiers getting sex is a good barometer of whether or not a region was racist. Don't think it matters what color they were, they were soldiers and the girls wanted them.

Imagine being on top of the world, living in the gorgeous country side of some bohemian European region, and then returning to a country where you're literally considered at best only 3/5ths of a regular person and at worst, less than dirt.

Black American soldiers fighting in Europe routinely came back with stories saying that they were welcomed way more in Europe than they did in America. Even Jesse Owens managed to receive a more kind reception from fucking Adolf Hitler than he did from Teddy Roosevelt.

I doubt that Europe was absent of racism, but even ugly personal sentiments are different animal than a societally that is set up to subjugate you.

The Nazis studied different cultures to develop their race and miscegenation laws.

America was included, and they found our historic one-drop rule to be absolutely insane and barbaric.

You're meant to be horrified that one particular regime imported the customary harshness of European colonial repression and racial hierarchy back into Europe. The right wing in 1920s Weimar Germany whipped up a moral panic targeted very specifically against black African soldiers in the French army who were serving on occupation duty in the Rhineland: "Die schwarze Schmach", the "Black Disgrace". The propaganda campaign peaked in 1920-23 and it attracted a lot of support from sections of the English-speaking press, voicing demands for the immediate withdrawal of black soldiers from Germany because they were "savages" and "primitives".

I think anyone would be treated better as a liberator in a country their army just saved from occupation than in their own country where they're just some guy. White American soldiers had a lot of fun in Europe, too.
