Why not just be a man and outright tell them that you're tired of them complaining and that if they do it again, you'd remove them from your life

I have/had a friend like that. He'd be cool most of the time. But if he got super drunk (which was often), he'd obsess over people who did him wrong in high school. It'd be the stupidest shit like "so-and-so didn't invite me to his party back in high school." This is a guy in his early 40s. I'd always be like, "Dude, we're old ass men now. Who gives a fuck about high school?" But he just can't let it go.

I used to cut them off, but now I only have a few more friends left. So now I'm gonna have to try and make some new friends before telling my current ones the shut the fuck up.
