You're kinda contradicting yourself here

I stand by my first statement.

Allow me to adjust my second statement to "I would like the show to do something that's not just relying on retreading old ground" and maybe that'll clarify what I'm saying.

The story by the nature of its very events has moved on from what the first two seasons are built on narratively. But the first episode has shown so far that they prefer to retread familiar things, and so far they haven't set up a worthwhile overarching plot to justify all this waffling.

Maybe it's just a symptom of "we need to catch everyone up because it's been a while" and they'll move on. That would be nice.

Yeah, the thing is Mando is at its best when it has episodes with a clear beginning, middle and end. Of course, it has an overarching plot and connective tissue to get us from one place to the next, but the best Mando episodes follow the formula of:

- Mando goes somewhere as the next step in his journey
- Encounters some new characters that need to be helped and/or a beast that needs to be slain
- Does so
- Picks up some clue or item that leads or helps him to his next destination

This episode kinda just started a bunch of plot threads and didn't resolve any of them so the end result isn't that satisfactory.

And Mando doesn't really have the complex political themes or characters of something like Andor in order to pull off that kind of thing.

That's fair. I don't think comparing the show with it's past is an issue. I was specifically talking about critiquing it in comparison with Andor.

For what it's worth, I didn't watch Andor and still thought this episode was mediocre.

I cant speak for anyone else of course, but when I brought up Andor I was looking more at the actual production and technical quality, not necessarily the story/writing/plot direction. I agree that the two shows are meant to have a different vibe/aesthetic, and I dont think its necessarily fair to compare a political/war drama with a samurai/ronin-style Space Western on an apples-to-apples basis. My observation was simply that Andors (frankly gorgeous) use of real sets and on-location shooting puts a pretty huge magnifying glass on Mandos heavy use of The Volume, which was already starting to feel noticeable.

The rest of my criticism of the show was not meant to be comparative with Andor.

I think they're just doing legwork for the future and where everything is heading in this episode. Season 4 has already been greenlit and they're saying that's simply going to be the middle of his story. So we got years of stuff upcoming.
