Not about call of duty. Its About exclusivity. Sony literally sets themselves up to be the only platform to not be able to play a ton of games if the merger goes through and thats the long term issue theyre trying to avoid by messing up the merger.

Nintendo gets gamepass later probably, might be streaming only but still. Stream gets gamepass compatibility with the steam deck and storefront. Now all of a sudden the lack of real exclusives that Microsoft got so much shit for the last few years becomes a major advantage. You can play those non exclusives on literally every mainstream platform that can actually run the damn thing except PlayStation. Thats what theyre afraid of, that kind of free market competition would choke out Sony and kill the brand within a decade.

There's nothing stopping PlayStation doing the same thing. They already release games on Steam for example and also have a subscription service.

The thing is even if the ecosystem or service became money maker instead of the hardware Sony still have the PlayStation brand as a major advantage. People will always need to buy some sort of console and PlayStation is an extremely strong brand worldwide.

I don't see them dying but Sony has been acting like shit for years. They keep paying Square for exclusive titles, they pay devs for exclusive content as well or early releases for Sony consoles. They fucked up the PS1 classic, they had a good share on the handheld market and fucked it all up with the greedy SD/memory cards on Vita. I can say more negative facts about Sony than I can with MS and Nintendo together sadly.

Sony also owns many loved IPs that people have been begged for sequels for a long time, perhaps we need the Microsoft merge for Sony to revive those IPs?

They've also censored DDLC and Martha is Dead's violence, something none of the other consoles did. A lot of Indie devs have spoken up about how difficult PlayStation is to work with.

To be honest, Sony has sat on top of the market since the PS1. While true the PS3 saw a blunder, at the end of its life it still outsold the 360.

Again, this is irrelevant and hurts Sony. With so many games being available on so many platforms due to Microsoft not locking down exclusives, Sony will become the worst place to game due to having the most limited platform.

And Horizon, Spiderman, God of War are on PC now. Last of Us comes next month.

Not that I see MS willing giving up the cash cow that are Activision games, given how much more of the market PS has. I could see them using it in the future to encourage Sony to accept Gamepass though, or some variation of it.

No it won't.... Sony could easily overcome the Activision/Blizzard-Microsoft merger by partnering with key companies themselves. Capcom, Square-Enix, or buying outright Konami would do wonders for them.

Sony is on worth 76 billion as a company, microsft is worth just under 2 trillion. If xbox were a seperate company under Microsoft that would be more feasible but Xbox is a part of the company and not just a brand under the company. Financially, Sony can't compete in buying out studios.

It's hilarious claiming that third place is going to have a monopoly by buying up one publisher because after years of the first place company laughing at them and saying LOL you have no games apparently this single acquisition is all it takes to completely take over the industry, but also only if we ignore that Nintendo will continue to be Nintendo and this acquisition will have no impact on them whatsoever.

Sony has made 20+ acquisitions in gaming. They have no right to complain about another competitor buying up a publisher:

Xbox as a company excluding the tech portion of Microsoft is probably closer to Sony than some might assume. And the funds of Microsoft aren't directly tied to the funds of the Xbox team.

Sony will never be able to compete tech-wise, but they can make some key decisions which can affect Xboxs ability to sell itself in the market. For example, most people in Asia don't own an X-Box. They are either mobile gamers, or Nintendo/Sony gamers. Xbox has always had issues breaking into that market. But if Sony can grab key Japanese developers which make up a good percentage of the gaming space, then it is a lot more even; and they can force Xboxs hand. It only leaves a handful of American companies for Xbox to align themselves with. Basically Activision for Call of Duty, and EA for general sports games.

Sony doesn't need to win the war, they just need to hold on to enough percentile so they can't be removed from power.

Microsoft only got into gaming because they would lose too much market in the tech sector once gaming consoles got competent enough to handle basic needs. Specifically the ps2 being able to play dvds is what drove them to get in. Its why they in turn tried so hard to turn the Xbox one into a media device that plays games instead of a game console. That failed spectacular but still.
