The topic was successfully answered on Post #2, what else we gonna talk about

literally any other game music than a game from 25 years ago

maybe talk about how this question is made more difficult because blockbuster games are more and more trending towards movie soundtrack aesthetics or outright using licensed music, and getting critically evaluated along those lines instead of what we enthusiasts would traditionally consider "video game music"

it's just especially funny because the song being discussed (One Winged Angel) has been supplanted by its successor (Megalovania) even within its own category

That doesn't stop them from becoming iconic, it just hasn't happened yet. If the mainstream decides to pick up and latch onto a particular song, then they'll do it regardless of style. Sometimes you can't predict them happening in advance but it could happen to anything.

talking about developments from 15 years ago rather than 25 is not a huge improvement

Megalovania is from 2008, so I wouldn't say it's that "recent"

I don't see the issue. I don't think it's even a particularly odd thought that the last iconic video game music could be 25 years old. Media since the 2000s has been so fractured and people just don't all consume the same stuff anymore. It's easier than ever for a group of 10 gamers to exist with zero games crossed over.

But also more people have touched Elden Ring than FFVII after only a year, so while it is more fractured the growth of the industry counteracts that to an extent.

However, in some ways it has also gotten less fractured thanks to a preponderance of multi-platform games. If you werent on Playstation you didnt play FFVII. These days there are fewer and fewer games like that. Really the issue is that some of the 90s crowd are just stuck in their ways like how sone insist there are no Pokmon after Gen I.

Also, the most recent part is getting lost a bit and people seem to be talking about the most iconic recent music. The Elden Ring theme is from last year and is iconic.

The Grammies just gave it a category this year! People were talking about The Last of Us show! Those are recent developments!

which have nothing to do with how western AAA soundtracks have been Hollywood inspired for years?

What? All of the nominations were from games whose composers who also work in the film industry, for the film score style of music. It is directly relevant to what types of video game music are currently getting recognized in the mainstream, even if it took 15 years to get formally recognized as a category.

also I'm not going to continue this conversation because it's pedantic but discussing a trend that started 15 years ago but is still currently ongoing is a bit different from saying there's been no iconic music since a single game soundtrack 25 years ago
