i guess so, if you're judging it only for what it set out to do, not from your own sensibilities as a game consumer

Sure. A lot of people only care to play games once. And if you're someone like me, you can play it again in 3 years like it's new anyway.

Actually you kinda don't need to, people will buy games like this and put them up there as the best now.

Absolutely. To me, a game having replay value means that there is something extra to replaying it. Like a new game+ mode, or split story paths/multiple endings. And a game being a 10/10 isn't dependent on the game giving me incentive to come back to it.

for actions games yes. its why i can't place most of the current gen action games as 10/10 since they rely too much on cutscenes and like forced dialogue bs which ruins replayability imo. heck even hi-fi rush was making me annoyed since it had so many cutscene segments in between the action. at least its pretty fun and i can skip the cutscenes after seeing them once. also lets you replay missions easily in that hub.

for action games i mainly just want to mash on the controller. the best ones imo offer a bit more depth with its mashing. if i get obsessed with an advance mashing game (i rate mashing games on how the controls feel if that makes sense the best ones feel tight af) i can spend hundreds of hours on it even if its campaign is only like 6 hours long lol. pretty sure i have more than 1k hours on dmc 3 across multiple systems (630 hours just on steam but more on non-steam copies of the game) for example and most of that time is spent mashing in bloody palace i only beat the main game like 5-10 diff times or something lol.

for nonaction games no (like point n click story w/ puzzle adventure games lol) i am very forgiving on these types of games. they are my rest stop when my fingers are cramp from too much mashing. i can't replay these but luckily there are thousands of these types of games so i just swap them out. id say there have been a few id give 10/10 for sure

i wouldnt consider a game a 10/10 if it had no replay value.

but there are games i thought were really good that i didnt feel the need to play a 2nd time.

The Bethesda Prey was one of them and Resident Evil village was another.

I feel like no. If something is that great, most people should want to revisit the experience at some point. Games are a more active and time consuming hobby so it's not like popping in a classic movie or whatever. But I think if you go ten years without ever feeling "man I'd love to play that game one more time", then it wasn't truly 10/10. >_>

Wanting to replay something doesn't mean that it has replay value. Just that it was so good that you will replay it, possibly in spite of having no replay value. Mystery games lose a lot by knowing the mystery, but it's absurd to act like there can be no 10/10 mystery games because of that.

Huh? If a game is good enough to re-experience, it has replay value, regardless of whether or not there's any new content to be found in doing so. >_>

Id also argue that if a mystery is only good because of the audience not knowing the twist, then it's not a really good mystery. The actual story surrounding it and how the characters reach those conclusions should be worth experiencing regardless of viewer knowledge. <_<

A 10/10 depends on how you feel about that specific game. If you feel the game was a 10/10 then that's exactly what it is. It doesn't matter what other people think about the game. There are plenty of games that I feel were a 10/10 but others might rate an 8/10 or lower. That doesn't change the fact that I highly enjoyed that game. There are plenty of games that I give a low score to that others rate a 10/10 as well.

Replay value comes from there being value in doing a second run beyond enjoyment. For instance, using another character in an RPG or using a different weapon in an action one. It's about recontextualizing story or seeing new gameplay.

And you are confusing a "twist" with a mystery. Both are narrative aspects but a mystery game is effectively about a puzzle with a narrative backdrop while a twist is about recontextualizing the story. You can go back to, say, Bioshock and see all the foreshadowing to its twist, but you cannot go back to a puzzle game and get the same enjoyment if you know the solution. Like, could you really have fun playing the same game of Minesweeper over and over with no new locations for the mines?

I guess yes.

I would love to replay certain titles again. Twenty years ago I used to do this.

Nowadays there are too many games I want to try. Replaying will never happen, unless I decide to quit purchasing new or recent releases.

Sure, games that you simply enjoy can still have replay value. But games where each play-through has variations, inherently have more replay value. Alternate character builds/classes, recruitable characters, branching story paths, alternate endings, new game+, new difficulty modes, new enemies, etc. All of that can make the replay value higher than just a straightforward, linear story with no customization or alternate paths.

Id also argue that if a mystery is only good because of the audience not knowing the twist, then it's not a really good mystery. The actual story surrounding it and how the characters reach those conclusions should be worth experiencing regardless of viewer knowledge. <_<
You're arguing two different things. A good story can still be enjoyed without the mystery. But if the audience already knows the plot, then it's literally no longer a mystery.

This. There are so many games to experience that I rarely replay anything; I'll throw 15-40 hours getting all the achievements or as close as I find feasible, then most likely be done with the game forever. I also don't play multiplayer games at all so that removes a chunk of stuff. If it's a 10/10 I'll likely want to experience it again at some point.
