I don't know why this is just interesting to me.

Every once in a while I'll hear someone say MCU is focused on nobodies and we need the xmen but the xmen (and fantastic 4) can't even make Thor numbers

I think that's directed at characters like the Eternals. People actually knew about Thor before he got a movie.

Movies in general have become more profitable than they were back when the Xmen movies were being released. Especially if they're Disney, including the MCU or Star Wars.

Just look at the highest-grossing films of all time and see how many of them are relatively recent releases.

Inflation is a thing too. I'd think with the economy today people would remember this fact.

You say that as if Thor is a nobody. He's one of the most popular heroes in the MCU

X-Men movies alternate between dumpster fire and freaking awesome. So each bad one negatively affects the earning potential of the next good one

Because of the MCU. He was barely known beyond comic fans before his movie and was not considered even remotely popular.

Prior to MCU Thor was more popular as a Persona than he was as a comic character

Both of these. A lot of people forget how many of the most popular MCU characters were "nobodies" before getting their movies.

I remember when Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was released, just about everybody was asking "Who the fuck is Rocket Raccoon?"

Even in the MCU nobody really liked Thor until around Ragnarok when he, just like everyone else in the MCU, got made into the same joke spamming character. When he was introduced and talked all Shakesperian and was more serious you'd struggle to find an MCU Thor fan lol.

Can we stop pretending that Guardians of the Galaxy was an underdog? You could add a raccoon with a gun to literally any movie and it would sell. Ishtar, Cleopatra, Heaven's Gate, Water World... any one of them would have been a success if you had added a talking raccoon with a gun.

I'm pretty sure the big draw for most people was the Grass-type Pokemon

His inclusion certainly didn't hurt the film's chances either.

Would a talking Raccoon with a gun have saved The Room?

The original best X-Men movie, X2, really doesnt hold up that well. Kind of boring. Id put it below every MCU film.

Thor was well known in the comic world. He has great comics but only really a few comic characters move numbers.

Iron Man used to sell like shit but that didnt stop RDJ.

Iron Man was so popular that he was killed off and replaced with his time-travelling teenage self. >_>

Wait, that story had Kang as the mastermind. Shit. RDJ coming back confirmed?

are you talking about like in the 90s? Or Thor overall as a comic character?

Thors popularity came in the 60s.

In comic circles. Outside of comic fans he wasn't popular or even well known until the movies came out.

Thor's biggest exposure before MCU was the movie Adventures in Babysitting, and he was only chosen for that because the rights were way cheaper than He-Man

From what I understand, Hulk and Thor had their media rights tied up in the 90s and that's why they didn't get as much exposure. Hulk received a cartoon and a video game. Thor got nada. Even in the Avengers video games, Hulk and Thor were absent.

I'm not sure who held the media rights to them, but I know that Hulk was appearing regularly in Capcom games by the mid-90s.
