Dogs usually handle things very roughly, even their own puppies, and need to be taught how to be gentle or they'll cause harm to others or destroy their belongings. This period of acclimation is usually absent in some of these homes where people insist that their giant dogs are gentle and will never hurt a fly. Just because their giant dogs won't hurt a child that's old enough to walk, talk, and more or less fend for themselves doesn't mean that the same thing is true for an infant.
