if it doesn't pay, wouldn't it be better not to do it at all, and focus exclusively on your passion project?

I don't want to work, but if I'm doing work then I don't mind getting two birds stoned at once.

I assume you mean it doesnt pay well.

Not gonna lie, something like data entry would be a dream job for me. I have anxiety issues and Im not really a very clever or crafty person, so I dont need some high-stress creative-type job.

Plop me down at a computer and have me input data and Id be a happy camper.

If only I could find one that does pay well enough >__>

Is it a job then? Not asking in a condescending snarky way.

Why will you not work on your passion project unless you're supposed to be working on something else at a company you volunteer for? Do you just need their resources?

Are these other people volunteers? If they are employees you might have a problem. No employer wants a volunteer taking up the time of employees asking them questions about non-work related stuff.

Going to be real with you... if your working a data entry job for free, your doing it wrong. That's someone trying to get free labor out of a position that at bare minimum should be paying slightly above minimum wage. Data entry is time consuming, and depending on the type of data entry can be as difficult as a lower difficulty physical job.

I worked a data entry position a few years ago as part of a work term, and they wanted me to get something like 200 documents sorted in 7 days via excel. I did it in 3, but I know I did it wrong after expanding my excel knowledge a few years later. But the point is, they were going to pay me minimum wage, and even that isn't worth it. You need a quiet area, a lot of concentration and very good organizational skills.

Getting people to care about your passion project is great and all, but you are also going to give off the aura that you can be taken advantage of without any backlash. You have to have standards even if you don't want to make money off of it. Take that money, put it aside for your passion project in case you ever need it.

tbh, I don't see someone caring for your passion project because you're volunteering any more than they would if you were working for a wage.

they would have to care independent of that, I think.

I wasn't saying that, I just meant your project has to speak for itself, and you not being compensated for for work isn't going to help you.

that's my view, at least.

Sure, I think people are spoiled and only expect something that is exactly what they want

He's not really getting anything from it, though? From what we can gather he's working a volunteer job that he doesn't want to do so he can pester the actual paid employees about their knowledge in relation to his passion project that ISN'T what he'll be working at on this volunteer job - but will ultimately lead him to a life where he never has to work (making the resume moot).

Elaboration...

When I was in undergrad, I developed my own (bad) ontology. I was schizophrenic. The weird thing is it all came to me at once, but was vague, and over about a year I developed it.

This flash of inspiration has happened a second time, and is related to the data entry project other people are working on...
