Does anybody have an opinion on this that isn't just a proxy for the arguments they made in the JK Rowling debate?

I'm just judging people that willingly fund Saudi's homophobic hate and murder tbh.
Might as well stop buying everything because they have their fingers in practically every pie in existence. You can name any publicly-traded company, and they likely have invested in it already. If it bothers you that much, maybe you ought to consider living up in the mountains and farm/forage/hunt for your own food.

No thanks, I consider it a great shame they own so much, a lot of it what I'd consider essential. Nintendo isn't essential. There are plenty of video game companies not owned in part by Saudi Arabia thankfully!

I feel like this is the 10th time I've seen this topic on CE.

And I'll say the same thing again. If this, or their connections to WWE or anything else really bother you that much I really hope you're willing to live a plastic free life. Actually not only plastic, but anything that uses petroleum based products period. Not to mention all the other ventures they have invested in. You would literally have to live a life of complete isolation in the woods to not be directly supporting any SA funded endeavor at this point. Oil and natural gas is used in so many more things/proceses/supply chains than the common pea brain can comprehend. There's a reason why they are able to toss billions around like it's money they found under the sofa. They are more global than China almost.
You are so close to understanding the point of said argument

And those essentials are going far more towards funding their atrocities than whatever money they'd get from Nintendo.

Ok, but I'm doing what I can. Are you really arguing I shouldn't judge people for buying Nintendo products unless I live like a hermit and don't engage with society?

The key thing that people here dont think about is that there are more suitable targets than someone who buys media. The people who make the media, for one. Instead they are actually brainwashed sheep and focus on infighting instead of going after more appropriate targets

Saudi Arabia is not a democracy; they don't listen to their own citizens, much less the citizens of the US or UK that are participating in this discussion here.

Then sanction them, and enforce it to a degree that Japan would block them from buying shares in their companies. What do you think telling Timmy he cant play Mario anymore is going to do?

The original argument was that knowingly giving money to established awful people for something as pointless as video game shows you don't care for the people those bad actors harm.

Giving money to video game companies that Saudi Arabia or China are involved in fits that bill. "Anyone can buy stock" and "We have to participate in society" don't seem particularly meaningful to that argument. They are countries that do harm and individual video games are not needed to participate in society or to continue playing video games. Again, this is not my logic, but the logic of the initial controversy.

Sanction them with what power?

A significant driver of these heated debates over media consumption is people's growing feeling that there's no realistic route to affect change through the government. There are, IMO, some good reasons for that feeling! So they try to achieve something using the lever they have available to them: the marketplace.

So become a Japanese citizen, become a Japanese politician, gain control of a majority of the government's legislation, and then enact a law to enforce regulation on free businesses based on the status of their investors?

That seems a bit untenable.

And Saudi Arabia wants to purchase shares in western countries for a reason. Thats the answer to with what power right there. The government is the only entity with the power to stop it. Calling someone an asshole on twitter for buying a game changes nothing. Its ethics theatre

Or vote in a US politician who will sanction SA, and ensure that Japan follows the sanctions and blocks the buying of their shares.

We can't change the government, but we can change the increasingly anti-consumer and immoral corporate fuckers that own the government?

If we're gonna be pessimistic, then let's go all the way and be honest. There is no hope of fixing the world within the confines of a system mutilated by those who wish to do us harm. They've made sure of that. Boycott, play video games, whatever makes you feel better. If we're fine with distracting ourselves to find some purpose and joy in this miserable world, that's fine, but that's what it is. I can't throw stones. I too am likely too cowardly to do what needs to be done.

It does, but not by much.

I just don't think any politician would do it because there's too much money in SA.

Asking an American politician to stand up to SA is a losing proposition.

I'm hesitant to actually guess how many of them are getting nice "donations" from the Saudis because it'll be bleak.

The only way to have relevant voting power in such a way would be to raise awareness. As that is essentially what the Harry Potter sort of boycott achieves that is a no go on that line. To not be a slacktavist one would need to be the politician.
