I can say, as someone who is extremely into the speedrunning community, the great majority of speedrunners hate GDQ.

Why ban Ion Fury?

For those asking for a summary, the best I could find that summarizes the issue is a Kotaku article, which is less than ideal, but it should give folks a sense of the internal arguments while presenting agdq staff in the most charitable light for fairness:

The tldr is that the rules are sufficiently vague that who does and doesn't get banned is wildly inconsistent and seems to be driven more by the personalities of the people running the show then by any sort of actual enforcement of rules.

What's this inner circle stuff you're talking about? I casually watch GDQ runs a couple of times a month and I've figured that there's probably a core crew of people (keiz, hobz, spikevegeta, etc).

there is a lot of who you know with GDQ now.

its why it took an eternity to dump protomagicalgirl and narcissa wright.

despite all of their drama and nonsense GDQ kept them in the loop much longer than they should have.

thats just one example, then go back to early GDQ and the runs had a lot more personality and charisma because they didnt enforce rules.

once it became family friendly they cut and shadow banned a lot of runners from coming back.

there was also drama with BotW speed runs when it first came out and a runner submitted a shitty run and was picked over more qualified runners. Only because the community agreed to not submit until the run was in a good state.

its all nonsense and HS drama tbh.

There are probably a million reasons from each one. I don't watch GDQ stuff I just thought it was funny because I hate Hogwarts Legacy and JJ Rowling.

No its not about making more money. The missed opportunity would be having a charity event (the game run) designed specifically to combat JK.

its a way to use her own IP to combat her influence. If thats worth the trouble is another discussion, but the point is instead of plugging your ears and pretending a thing doesnt exist, you can instead make that thing work for you in a meaningful way.

i personally dont care though cause the donations for this one specific event likely wont be enough to matter in any substantial way.

It's a double edged sword as they're promoting the game itself which leads to more money for Rowling. Not to mention all of the extra attention this game just gets in general and not in a good way.

Don't really think it's much of a missed opportunity at all.

GDQ is corrupt and often bans people seemingly out of some power trip thing. But there are a lot of trans women in the management, and this just kinda seems obvious to me. Surprised they haven't already banned it tbh

Even PS1 Harry Potter??? Nooo!

GDQ is way too clique-y at this point and it's hurting the product(?). That said, considering GDQ videos frequently have splash screens at the start saying to support trans rights and there are quite a few trans speed runners as participants, this isn't a surprising decision at all.

but in relation to potential corruption there was a wiki that was trying to connect Mike Uyama to a laundering scandal. I cant recall where I saw it.

but it did have a few interesting points but nothing concrete.

I don't watch GDQ anymore, but I appreciate what they do for charity. Considering their base, it makes sense why they did this. It's their organization, they can do whatever they want. And I say this as someone who disagrees the game should be banned.

Only the first few GDQs were any good. The bigger it got the less entertaining it became IMO.

Yeah sorry corrupt was a wrong word. I think some of them do fall under the lines of having a serious power trip. I think people also generally didn't like their choice of charity, instead of doing what everybody requested, which was to fund mental health related charities, which actually have relevance to gamers. But they eventually got suicide prevention type stuff in there

They also got really sponsor crazy at one point and just randomly banned a lot of people. There's a whole big wikipedia section, and the 2017~2018 era was when they were particularly obtuse. I haven't followed their news the last 2 years to know what's going on though, but they're way less crazy now
