Don't lie.

He should be pilloried for destroying the original Star Wars reels.

Guy has done nothing but create works of art that has brought joy to literally hundreds of millions of people across decades.

He has nothing but my respect for that.

In terms of his skill? I think he's an awfully flawed creator and only excelled when hindered at every oppotunity by other smarter people molding his art.

Star Wars Episode 4 infamously was challenged at every level of production and still had to be saved by an editor as the original cut of the film was awful.

Then the prequels were "All Lucas, all the time" unchallenged and they were awful awful movies.

Lucas needed someone to smack his wrists and go "No that's shit, stop it." and lost that in the 21st century

I've been a SW fan for as long as I can remember, hes someone I'll always appreciate.

I don't consider him a film maker so much as a business person. His movies are shit but he uses cliched themes that people like to get broad appeal, but his real genius was his deal with Hasbro to make 50% off the toys because Hasbro didn't think the movie would translate to toys well...they were very wrong and so started the Hasbro action figures line and made Lucas billions.

Destroying the theatrical versions to make the Special Edition is the only thing he's done that actually bothers me. He could have made all the bad remakes and prequels he wanted as long as he made the originals available for those of us who want to watch beloved movies of our youth the way they were in our youth.

Instead, if you want to watch it on streaming media you have to watch the Special Edition. If you want to watch Star Wars in any format that actually looks good on today's TVs, the closest thing you can get to the theatrical version is those "despecialized editions" that some fans cobbled together. And apparently the original reels have actually been destroyed so no one can even go back and release them after he dies.

Aside from that, I have nothing against him and still think his earlier work is all wonderful.

On one hand I like him as he is a massive Trekkie and it was his love of Star Trek: The Original Series that got him into Sci-Fi.

But on the other hand I don't like him as he did create the awful Star Wars (I have watched episodes 4 - 6 many times) and started the whole which is better Star Trek or Star Wars debate,

Seems like a cool guy. I think people way overreacted about the Star Wars special editions.
