I'll separate between Regional and National. I'm gonna keep it DS only as long as possible but you do need GBA transferring for a couple of pokemon >_>

Regional Dex:

1. Catch, evolve, and breed all the pokemon you can in your game (enjoy catching Munchlax and Feebas LAWL) (181/210)
2. Trade for the starters you didnt get: Turtwig line, Chimchar line, Piplup line (187/210)
3. Trade to get the evolutions of Alakazam, Gengar, Golem, Machamp, Rhyperior, Dusknoir, Porygon2, Porygon-Z, Scizor, Magmortor, Electivire (198/210)
4. Trade for all the version exclusive pokemon in other gen 4 Sinnoh games: Stunky, Stuntank, Misdreavus, Mismagius, Murkrow, Honchkrow, Glameow, Purugly (206/210)
5. Trade for the fossil pokemon you don't have (depends on your trainer ID which one spawns) (208/210)
6. Do Underground bullshit by connecting with people 32 fucking times to get a Spiritomb to spawn (209/210)
7. Either beat Pokemon Rangers to get a Manaphy egg transferred over or hack, glitch, or trade for Manaphy (210/210)

You have to do a minimum of 17 trades. Fuck, that's a lot of trading.

And yes, Arceus, Regigigas, Phione, Cresselia, Darkrai, Shyamin, and Heatran are excluded from the Regional Dex for some reason. idk why >_>

National Dex:

1. Catch, evolve, and breed the 194 pokemon you can get (including pokeradar chaining, and waiting for the correct daily pokemon in swarms, Trophy Garden, Great Marsh.......) (404/493)
2. Trade for the 3 new trade evolutions needed: Slowking, Politoed, Kingdra (407/493)
3. Trade for 6 pokemon in the Diamond/Pearl postgame that aren't in Platinum postgame: Trapinch line, Clamperl line (413/493)
4. Trade for all the gen 1-3 pokemon with Heartgold/Soulsilver (including swarms, safari zone bullshit, and trading within those games to get Rayquaza to appear and such) (you can get all 9 starters from gen 1-3, but only 1 of each gen per save file, so you'll need multiple playthroughs >_>) (482/493)
5. Transfer the 3 Regi pokemon from the GBA Hoenn games, and then catch Regigigas (486/493)
6. Either hack, trade, or glitch for Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus (493/493)

You have to do an additional minimum of 52 trades (including optimally trading new pokemon that would also evolve through trading). Fuck. That's a lot of trading.

Notes: You can insert various GBA pokemon games into a dual-slot DS to get certain gen 1-3 pokemon to appear in the wild at certain routes. Which ones appear depend on the game inserted, but it isn't really that many (about 25 different pokemon). There was a special event to get the Regi pokemon to spawn in Platinum but that has long since passed. Arceus has an event programmed in the Sinnoh games but the event never released for some reason lol. You can get a Mew through filling up boxes in My Pokemon Ranch on the Wii (which is now defunct lol).

Also, a lot of the pokemon you can catch are fucking BULLSHIT! Munchlax requires you to put honey on certain trees and wait 6 hours for a spawn. But there's only 4 trees in the game he can spawn in (which depends on your trainer and secret id) and those trees only have a 1% encounter rate! Feebas spawn in 4 out of 528 water tiles in some cave and only has a 50% encounter rate, so you can miss it. And those tiles change every day LOL. You can only transfer up 6 pokemon from the GBA games per day. Swarm pokemon, Trophy Garden, and Great Marsh rotate every day but you only get 1 of each (and there's 27 different pokemon that can swarm). So it'll take months to get all of them. Obviously it's way fucking easier to just transfer these pokemon from the GBA games or HGSS >_>

Yea idk why they promoted Munchlax and Lucario so hard for that gen but made it so hard to get either.

Oh yeah, Lucario is a pain in the butt too. But at least it's a guarantee to get Riolu for doing Riley's bullshit

Regional Dex is basically all the pokemon you can see and catch before you beat the champion at the end of the game (usually a reasonable number like 150-200ish). National Dex is literally every pokemon in existence. Usually a bunch of those spawn in the post-game but you'll usually have trade for the majority of them.

You would think that Feebas/ Munchlax being difficult to get, they would have stats comparable to Dragonite, Metagross etc.

I'm pretty sure there's another string attached to that Manaphy egg on Pokemon Ranger. Don't you need a code from an event to unlock it in that game too?

Have you tried Arceus. I loved Platinum the most out of any Pokemon, and was disappointed with the remakes. Arceus felt like a true love letter to those who liked the Sinnoh region. I haven't played Pokemon since Sun, but Legends Arceus was such a nice change of pace from what I was used to, and was a lot more fun than I thought it was going to be!

Okay, I looked it into it some more.

Rangers 1 gives you a Manaphy egg if you complete the game and use a secret code to play a special mission. However, you can only get 1 egg per cartridge, even if you delete the saves. So basically there's only a finite amount of Manaphy eggs left and you probably cant get it this way anymore (or you can use a hacked DS to completely format the cartridge, but if you're gonna do that, you might as well just hack a Manaphy in for yourself lol)

Rangers 2 and 3 also had Manaphy eggs, as well as Darkrai in 2 and Deoxys and Shaymin in 3. However, these were wifi downloaded missions, soooo obviously you aint gonna find that anymore

I loved it. It was a very refreshing change in the pokemon formula. My only complaint is that there isn't a lot of battle stuff to do in it. It's really focused on just stalking and catching pokemon

I wasn't very excited about Pokmon from 2018-2021, even though I got Sword. Legends reignited my love of Pokmon and I've already played both Legends and Violet for more hours than I played Sword.

Yeah, agree with both of these. I haven't been this interested in Pokemon in years. I don't have Scarlet/Violet, but Legends has convinced me that I should play them, and I might even get Shining Pearl (had Diamond as a kid) since I hear I get a special treat for doing everything in Legends Arceus.

And yeah, there isn't too many battles, but the boss fights are pretty interesting and fun, and god damn, there will be one battle in the game that will be remembered as a CLASSIC for years to come. Literal top 3 (maybe even top 1) Pokemon battle in all of Pokemon imo. It was so good, and it made me forgive GameFreak for outsourcing D/P remakes since they were putting all their love into a true masterpiece of a game. Yeah, they can be kinda shoddy with some things, but it reminded me that there's a reason GameFreak succeeded so well with Pokemon in the first place.
