The main discussion around Hogwarts Legacy has been JK Rowling's transphobia. It's inextricably linked. Like that dumb unbreakable vow thing they do in Harry Potter.

Did it make normies hate trans people even more? Maybe, but they already do. They've already passed hundreds of anti-trans laws in different states. What else are they gonna do, kill trans people? Oh wait, they're doing that already too.

Like it or not, the boycott associated that game with JK's transphobia, and in that sense it was a success.

No normal people don't hate trans-people. The average person doesn't care one way or the other. They are staying out of political they know nothing of Rowling's views or the laws law makers are passing.

No every single person who bought Hogwarts Legacy was rubbing their hands together evilly and laughing like Snidely Whiplash when they did so.

No it's true. Most people are able to ignore this stuff. The only people who care are the ones trying to make trans-people's lives worse and the ones fighting for the rights of Trans-people. Everyone else is just living their lives. Most people are enjoying the Wizard game and don't care about the drama.

I care, you care, most people are not us.

I mean you are not wrong. I had coworkers who didn't know of JK Rowling's Transphobia until this controversy happened. Of course it's a double edge sword because I have some of my co workers who agree with her. If you are looking for any other victory in this boycott, you are not going to find it.

Honestly this is what everyone should have gone with to begin with

Maybe even use the game as a mass media message and trans positive charity against j.k Rowling and also to make sure people know exactly what she's doing and saying and how it hurts people.

But yeah,, it definitely wasn't a total failure

Facts. The average person doesn't really care. But just because they don't care doesn't mean they're against it, they just don't know or don't actively think about it.

You've subtly replaced "trans rights" with "not buying wizard game" in your mind. They are not the same thing. You can care about one without caring about the other.

I will support trans people by respecting them and voting for the people that do not try to endanger their lives.

Sadly there's a bunch of morons in US lately that cant separate social media memes from real life politics and their consequences and thats were some moderates lie. Something as petty as that COULD be the catalyst for voting rep.

And one thing is rude and another outright harassing.

This

It was very tempting to go to edgelord teenager mode and being happy that the game was a success just out of spite from everyone who acted like buying the game was a war crime and not shut the fuck up about it, but I decided to not to let the super vocal asshole minority ruin it for everyone else

An example of this would be any of the MAGFest facebook groups, meanwhile there's been a Harry Potter wand vendor there every fucking year. No protests in front of that stand at any point right there at the convention, instead everybody acts tough behind Twitter

The boycott was one of the worst examples of "passive activism" in recent memory. It doesn't require you to actually do anything and many of the people "boycotting" were people who weren't going to buy the game in the first place, but piggybacked onto the controversy just to gain points.

It lowkey frustrates me to no end how many people on the left will rally behind not doing something, but getting any kind of meaningful organization or concentrated voting effort going is like pulling teeth.

Modern slacktivism in a nutshell. The only way you can make people take a stand is if it's something they were going to do anyways. Way too many people would have rode the bus in Montgomery cause they just couldn't be bothered to walk.

I still don't associate Hogwarts Legacy with JK Rowling tbh, anymore than I associate the actual book series with her. After finishing the series, you think I thought "Hmm JK Rowling wrote this, I want to know more about JK Rowling"? Nah fam. I moved on. Similarly, I'm not playing Hogwarts Legacy because Hogwarts shit is just not my thing anymore, I couldn't care less about JK Rowling.
