A temp contract given to people who find themselves in a shit job market, usually used to manipulate hopeful candidates into taking a job with no security and shit pay because it is often seen as a "bridge" to the next application cycle.

and they end up being "contract temp workers" for years and years and years, receiving no benefits, etc etc despite teaching a huge chunk of college courses across the country.

Basically temporarily assigned and isnt their usual position. A couple of my coworkers are adjuncts at our academy

Someone paid less to try harder than a tenured professor who's usually just shilling their new book

as a community college instructor (and adjunct at 4-years at times), I know adjuncts who have been doing it for decades.

I ended up getting a full-time job for a couple of years, but currently most likely going to quit that at some point to get out of academia doing something I can make more money in (I'm currently also working as an analyst at a market research firm)

When you don't have academic tenure and gotta get the scraps from universities to teach.
