I'm so happy it had a beta because I was still stupid enough to consider buying it after Evolve.

I bought it during the steam sale hoping to get a group to play with.

Man. Fuck this. It was $30 bucks to buy a dead game.

I enjoy the game and played the beta, got the season pass last week during a sale and very happy with my purchase.

Sure are a lotta live service games dying all at once

why do people expect developers to stick with one game forever these days?

I mostly play it with my brother and we enjoy it despite the bone head decisions they constantly make. The DLC was way better than the main campaign

I heard they were finally starting to get it in a good direction too, lmao.

I played the beta and didn't enjoy it enough to complete one of there overly long map series. Besides it wasn't going to have versus which was the best mode in L4D. Still I wanted to scratch the L4D itch and the beta for B4B proved it just wasn't gonna be fun after a few games so I never bought the game.

They never even bothered to add couch coop.

I've never played the game, but the article mentions that they released three expansions, how much more content do they need to make? That's three more expansions than most games get.

The first expansion added some boring ass tunnels that you can go into in each campaign if you wanted for some extra rewards but it never felt worth it. The second and third were actually much more in line with L4D, with only 6 parts and a unique location (whereas the main campaign acts repeat locaitons NUMEROUS times), so the game was heading in a much better direction. To hear them say "we're done!" is annoying.

I guess I just struggle to feel sympathy here considering they kept updating the game, especially in light of their reasoning. They want to make a new game, and they don't have enough people to support an old game that will only lose players as time goes on. These people are running a business, they're always going to choose the option that makes them more money and they're right for doing so.

Honestly this. Though I guess it depends on what their goal was to begin with. Was this game a live service game? When they stop updates, are they going to shut down the servers? I'll admit, I didn't read the article so I'm just commenting blind here.

Yeah its like, gamers are constantly complaining about live service games, but also want certain games to just be supported indefinitely

I think the most important factor is what was promised at launch. Gamers are constantly complaining about live service games, but they still have every reason to expect that if they do buy one, and the company has promised a certain amount of support, they will get that level of support because it's factored directly into the cost of the game and their buying decision.

So if Turtle Rock said something like they would be supporting this game for years to come, then it's perfectly valid to call them out for killing the game early. Especially if features they promised to implement, such as couch co-op, we're never actually added to the game.

Ultimately, the complaint around live service games and the complaint around those games being shut down is the same root: players want their games to be finished at launch and to get all of the features they were promised in their purchase. You can do that by not being a live service and just delivering a complete title, or you can do that by being a live service with a long delivery pipeline, but a failure in either case is going to lead to the same sense of being ripped off.

Guess I dodged a bullet not getting into it a year ago. I was a massive L4D fan too.

So...

It got 3 expansions. They said they will still support it, and that they just have no more content planned for release...

And people are crying about it? Sounds like they put out a full game, gave 3 expansions to it, and plan to still support and bug fix it, but are moving onto active development of another project.

Sounds like...well... normal game dev cycle?
