Like it's been a few years since I played the first game but I don't recall them having really any notable back and forth aside from "angry old guy and sarcastic foul mouthed teen" for a few lines of dialogue They were humorous scenes in an otherwise pretty bleak game. Though I think in the show Ellie alone so far provides the humor needed, and the relatively optimistic Bill and Frank relationship the show gave us makes up for a lot of the outright depressing shit the series has otherwise. I started playing it again just before the release of the show and you can't have a show where Ellie asks a question, Joel gives a one-word response or a short sentence, and then it's an awkward "oh" or something from Ellie.
