Western gamers barely seem to give a damn about that series. It's personally my least favourite fighting series. The Japanese seem to love it. Thoughts?

In the west, more people have heard and play Tekken.

It's my favorite fighting series.

AFAIK, the Japanese are the only ones who play VF in significant numbers. And of course I mean significant for a fighting game, which is a already niche to begin with.

I really like the series though. Its very polished and there are some very cool characters.

Probably because it's technically like 3D rock paper scissors and people don't get it and want to just hit buttons. Tekken 3 basically stole it's shine because it was a bit less clunky than VF2 and you could mash out strings.

Even when VF5FS was free on PS+ some Tekken pros only played VF5FS they only wanted to play it for like 1 week because VF5 is all these movement techniques and nitaku and crouch dash cancel or evasion dash cancel neutral. Plus even noticing what the opponents foot position and where they're facing on knockdown is important to notice. You also have to know ALL normal advantages and disadvantages. As in you basically have to know how to play every character unless all you're playing is other bad casual players. Which there aren't any anymore, they all got bored of losing.

Don't think really many people in the USA play Virtua fighter. There's dozens of other fighting series which rank above that in terms of sales and how many people play. Like it could never reach a street fighter, mortal Kombat, Tekken, killer instinct, guilty gear, and so on type of level

The issue is VF is a super technical game with a very high learning curve. Tekken 3 stole any spotlight VF will ever have. It also doesn't help it's not as flashy as Tekken 7. No doubt VF was revolutionary for it's time and almost every Tekken game was copying anything it did, but in the end Tekken made it to the top.

Interesting. VF really is very purist, though. Some people are amazing at Street Fighter, but SF can be fun to play at any experience or ability level.

I really enjoyed Virtua Fighter 5 on Xbox 360. Far superior game than Tekken and Dead Or Alive.

Did you know that is was because of Virtua Fighter that the main protagonist of Tomb Raider ended up being female.

Lara Croft's creator was originally going to have the main character male as he was aiming the game at the male demographic but one day he saw the staff playing VF on Saturn and they were using the female characters. So he asked them why they were using the females they told him "well Toby think about it, We are men and we like to look at the hot female characters". So that got him thinking "I am aiming the game towards men so how about changing the character from male to female" and a legend was born.

VF5 FS is the best fighting game I've played

the real reason it isn't popular is because there isn't the gameplay bullshit factor to appeal to the FGC and the presentation isn't there to draw in the casuals
