To the point where Super Metroid became the standard of the series, with the NES version being seen as more of a prototype. But yeah, doesn't technically count since with Metroid even the handheld games are very important in the series, and the Gameboy sequel even is officially titled as Metroid II. It just didn't have any of the charm 2 had. The characters sucked. Music sucmed.
