They are making a new SRD licensed under CC and you can choose either the old OGL 1.0a or the new one. Both will be valid.

Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes D&D, has a license that allows you to copy/paste their rules to make officially licensed products for D&D and it's open for everyone to use.

They tried to cut off this contract and create a newer, much more restrictive one, that they could monetize better and there was some pretty massive backlash.

The text of the 1.1 license leaked and it was horrible.

So they made some improvements and released 1.2 and it was still horrible.

They have now cancelled 1.1 and 1.2 and reverting back to 1.0a which is the version everyone liked and releasing a new version under Creative Commons which is a well favored license in fan spaces like this. But you don't have to use the Creative Commons one if you don't want. You can keep using OGL 1.0a

Which really sounds like they're freaking out over Kobold Press' (I think it was them) plan to create a new, GPL-style open source license and handing it off to a third party to manage for free, effectively completely replacing Wizard's OGL with one they no longer have control over.

This, and it burned enough bridges or got enough people scared that they might leave for a better system.

I'll be curious to see how this effects Critical Roll since they just announced a new season and, AFAIK, they haven't said anything in support of the community, presumably because they're all under contracts.

Critical Role isn't affected in any way. Their original shows get any copyright shit stripped from them before they get made. The tabletops are easily covered under fair use.

I meant more of their viewership. As in, has the property being tainted with all this licensing stuff killed off enough community interest that they're going to stop dialing in to it. I could very easily see the community collectively turning away from critical role for their unwillingness to stand up for the community as well. Assuming they didn't say anything, of course.

Oh I don't think people are going to hold anything against Critical Role if they continue to stream D&D but I think they may move onto something different anyway just to change things up.

I'd definitely be interested in seeing them do something in WH40k (probably as a side thing to the new Henry Cavill show).

Pathfinder isn't for everyone. Some people who bought it because "it's almost like D&D" are gonna be disappointed. First edition PF was extremely rules heavy and 3.5 D&D which is what it was based on was already a very rules heavy game.

They did make a statement that gave full support to creators without outright demonising WotC I believe.

But, I hope this is the beginning of the end for WotC and that all the major associations pull away, and their competitors get some serious self made material out for people to use instead.

Wow, finally some good news on this front. All the pressure must have finally made Hasbro realize they could either have the $1B/year revenue from D&D they have now OR they could continue to try to over-monetize it and lose all their D&D income

I love it one of my favorite editions and I even got the special collectors editions they made for the anniversary. It's actually my second favorite edition after 5e. The level caps are way more generous than 1e, and there's a lot less options in character creation which means less rules are needed to create a character. It's the perfect edition for OSR stuff in my opinion.

The statements they've made are as close to "we think it's stupid bullshit but we are legally forbidden from saying so" as they can be without actually saying so. Particularly when they just announced a huge deal with Amazon; the last thing you want to do when closing something like that is showing that you're going to violate contracts.

Honestly, second edition Pathfinder feels like a totally different game, everything is easy to understand and character creation/progression is way more satisfying than in 5e. GMs have much better tools at their disposal as well for actually running the game, and having every aspect of the game (except for lore) online for free is a huge boon for accessibility.
