They actually brought him back in recent seasons for a couple episodes and even made a sight gag about how he seemed to disappear entirely, with him stepping out of a very dark corner after being mentioned. ... Yeah he pops up every now and then, but he pretty much sets up the main story and goes away. I think he was the one to suggest Homer put on the "Safety Salamander" costume in one episode.
