Many of them had dumbed down cartoons.
Rambo, Robocop, Conan the Barbarian... heck, Conan got a magic sword that sent anybody he hit to a prison dimension... Toxic Avenger... how the fuck do you even think "Hey, lets turn this into a kids cartoon!" while watching him kill and rape people?
Meanwhile the girly My Little Pony pilot had dark sections that looked like they would have fit the Heavy Metal movie.

Pretty much anything and everything got a platformer tie-in back in the day. And it was glorious.

Yeah, a lot of kids like R-rated movies. They weren't exactly forbidden from seeing them, they just had to have a parent with them. And these were some of the biggest movies of their time.
