I just finished reading this, actually. Strikes me as wild that any school would make it assigned reading, but cool.

That Was Then, This is Now by S.E. Hinton.

It's by the same woman who wrote The Outsiders and takes place in the same world and time period.

That was one of the few assignments that I actually did. I didn't do fuck all in high school but I liked English class.

i read a lot on my own in high school so most of the assigned reading really irritated me because it was interrupting whatever i was going through already. I'm having a really hard time remembering exactly what any of it was, though, which is kind of depressing lol.

I remember we read a lot of plays for some reason. I liked A Doll's House and The Importance of Being Earnest. In 12th grade I remember doing Dracula and enjoying it too.

I remember enjoying "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" But I legit remember nothing about it. I also enjoyed most of the Shakespeare we read as well.

So glad we didn't have to read Catcher in the Rye as I will maintain it is possibly one of the worst books I have ever had the displeasure of reading and likely would have put me off reading all together.

That's unfortunate. The way our teacher did it really got people involved. After seeing the play we had to write an essay and IIRC, no one got lower than a B.

My English teacher never let us read any classics and instead we would read boring as fuck stories from local authors about Australian football and the quiz on the book was never about the plot, themes or characters but obscure shit like "what colour were the bricks of some building mentioned as an establishing shot with nothing to do with the story or themes?"
