He had a vision about it but because there were no deviations he figured following the vision was the only way to protect her and his friends. Everyone on Paradis allies with Marley to kill Eren and it ends with Mikasa decapitating him. We get a flashback to Eren telling Armin his plan before erasing his memories and Armin tells him he's a moron. This leads to Eren having a breakdown about how he loves Mikasa and he doesn't want anyone else to be with her. She ends up marrying Reiner or whoever, there's a temporary peace achieved by Armin but Marley kills everyone on Paradis anyway. Oh, and Eren turns into the tree that Ymir found with the Titan parasite in it and some kid finds it years later. From what I remember: If she had responded differently from his vision he was planning to not go through with the rumbling. Maybe I'm missing something here but it felt like that was the determining factor for him actually going through with it and why that scene was focused on. I'll admit me being wrong about the second point. Third point: If I'm not mistaken, the epilogue chapter shows fighter jets destroying Paradis as they ended up in a war with the rest of the world anyway. Like that's how I reframed it in my head, so I wanted to be cautious about how I asked my question lol. The timeskip starts with the world declaring war on Paradis, with Eldians in general being soon to follow. From there on the situation is very clearly kill-or-be-killed. Eren outright states that he knows Marley and the people of the outside world arent any different from his friends and we see that the rumbling causes him extreme trauma but at the end of the day hes stuck in the sacrifice a billion strangers or sacrifice all your friends/family hypothetical, and I cant really fault him for making the choice many people would. I also enjoyed the fact that we got to see Eren as a human in the flashback rather than the generic stoic anime psycho hed been for the rest of the timeskip. He deeply wanted to be with Mikasa and live life alongside his friends, but he knew his death was a prerequisite for his friends surviving, as it eliminated titans while also showing the world that Eldians arent all bad. Thats what I took from the Thank you scene at the end. Its not necessarily saying the rumbling was justified. Thats not the point. Eren sacrificed his humanity in starting the rumbling and eventually his life to save his friends. Theyre showing gratitude for his sacrifices even if they dont agree with his actions. ~~Oh and, the epilogue doesnt make Eren a failure. Ending war forever was never something Eren set out to do. He wanted to give his friends full, free, peaceful lives and its made clear he succeeded.~~ Is the ending perfect? Absolutely not. But its serviceable. I was worried that it was going to end with ~~everyone forgiving each other and Im glad thats not what we got.
