I'm at work waiting for work to start. Nothing has gone wrong today and I had a great weekend. I enjoy my job, and have an amazing wife to go home to.

And yet, I want to cry and give up. At the best times I want to retreat into a void, at the worst I'm actively suicidal. Comes and goes with seemingly nothing to do about it but ride it out. Medication sort of helps, but it's so slight it could easily be a placebo effect.

I want to be done with this x.x

Decent not amazing. Building up the motivation and energy for exercise is one thing, but the bigger issue is just being able to go to the gym, something I currently can't afford. Wife and I are going to start soon so she can build up strength back in her legs, but sadly there's limited options.

have you tried doing the most boring and mundane stuff for like a month or so? like no instant gratification stuff that makes your dopamine levels spike, no video games, no social media, no gamefaqs, no drugs, no junk food, no alcohol, no porn

just reading, meditation, exercising

cold showers allowed

How long have you had your job/position? Have you considered trying a new job? Maybe another task/position in the same industry?

I also have a job I like, but after two years doing the same thing, I've reached the point where I question if I want to do this for the rest of my life. And I remember the last time I was happier was in college, when it's only 4 months taking a few classes, then vacation, then another 4 months taking new classes.

From my experience, the changing of routines can help take off the stress that builds up over time.

Part of the reason I'm in the current depressive slump is because I've been struggling to find a decent job after being forced to quit one I loved because they weren't going to approve time off for my wedding/honeymoon. Current job I've been in since August, but it's temp so the contract ends on the 10th. Was supposed to end in March but they moved it up so now I have a month to scramble and find a replacement.

Exercise helps, but it doesnt fix depression. Youre still gonna get depressed.

And here we have someone talking out his ass to people with actual experience in the matter. I mean ffs, just on face value jumping to "you should exercise more" is condescending as hell. I've tried exercising, and dieting, meditation and self care. They are effective only to a point. On top of that, they're incredibly difficult to do regularly when depression attacks not just your motivation and energy, but your very memory, making it hard to set up any sort of routine. And I have that on top of ADD, which has gotten more severe and detrimental as I get older but still can't get medicated.

Honestly I'd love to but I don't even know where to start or how to get them :(

I'm on one. It's actually seeming to work, which is a relief since this is maybe my fifth or sixth I've tried.

To vent and get some sympathy, which most people seem to understand. Why can't you?

ROOTFayth posted...

You see, there's the thing. To form habits, I need repetition. To create repetition, I need motivation, energy, and memory, three things that depression inhibits. So yes, they ARE things you try, because you're attempting to enact a change, and essentially pushing against the current in doing so.

of course it doesnt CURE it. no one thing 100% cures it (except death lol), he never said that. what
and it actually is said to be one of the best ways to help battle it

In a vacuum it might be but in reality there's a TON of problems with it as a treatment. It's better as a preventative measure.

None of these have anything to do with being depressed. You just said the equivalent of "I have nothing to be sad about but I'm still depressed."

Yeah, depression and sadness are not the same. You need to get to the root cause of your depression and if you feel like you do, you are not doing so by yourself. See a doctor.

No exercise is not an answer to depression, it is a crutch and can be an addiction if you depend on it to treat your depression. A friend of mine tried to treat his depression and alcoholism by becoming obsessed with being fit - he got injured and then tried to kill himself. Being in good shape is good for your health in general - it is not a treatment for depression.

Im waitin for my friend to wake up for the infos on shrooms

in the meantime I want to make clear that although it is known for a fact that exercise helps with depression that nowhere did I say it was easy to gather the willpower to even start, Im not quite sure how you should go about it, but I read the book Atomic Habits last summer and I think that may be helpful, if youve got some time to read maybe give that a shot

I too struggle with depression and low energy with next to no motivation. I need to exercise more, and when I was going on walks I definitely felt better. Since I started my WFH job I don't do much. It's like the hardest thing to do sometimes... Even getting motivated to take the trash to the bin on the street.

You mentioned being on one medication. Has your doctor suggested another? I'm currently on three and it has helped tremendously. But it took time to get there. Some didn't work or had bad side effects.

Try to hang in there. Celebrate the little accomplishments and try to grow off of them. It's not easy. Not in the slightest. But worth it to try.

Currently I'm on Venlafaxine which is working well enough. I have something for panic attacks, can't remember the exact pill right now. I was also on Methylphenidate for ADD and that was greatly helping, but my provider was terrible and unreliable and now I'm waiting to find another one :/

I couldn't do the Effexor. Tried for a long time but it gave me the most vivid dreams. I felt like I never got rest.

Hoping you find a good provider. Mine has been great. Kinda stern with me sometimes but definitely has been helpful.

She suggested therapy but I can't afford it. Sucks..

Definitely keep trying. I know it's hard. And sometimes I don't follow my own advice and just clock out and lay in the bed. But have to keep trying.

Im assuming since you are on gamefaqs, that you might have a Switch.

If you lack motivation for exercise, could you try Ring Fit Adventure? It really can tone you up, and at least get the blood flowing. You wont get buff, but it is fun, keeps records of everything, and has a long Rpg mode where you do exercise to defeat monsters and stuff. It has a lot of other activities too, and is really fun. It helps me a lot, and got me through some hard times when depression was getting me at my worst.

I'm right there with you man. For me the hardest part about working through depression is still trying to be a good dad. Some days I really just want to curl up somewhere and disappear but I'm not allowed to do that. It's really hard to be a strong role model when you feel like actual shit most of the time.
