Series? Monster, as it could mostly just be a western show.

Otherwise, probably Miyazaki movies. My Neighbor Totoro is probably a good first rec.

Probably You are Umasou. It has most of the same beats as golden age Disney outside of art direction, so anyone who grew up with Disney will inherently have an affinity for it.

I think it depends first on what you're looking for, like, genre, if you're looking for something light or heavy, how long it might be, and so on.

because there are a lot of introductory series and movies you can watch, and depending on how you feel about them, you can find stuff that are similar.

I'd say start with My Hero Academia. If the first ep makes you feel emotions keep watching.

Attack on Titan is a great second anime to watch, but not a good first one IMO. You need about 3 hours before it gets really really good.

akame ga kill is a good one too if you like the fighting in the Boondocks. It has a lot of common tropes but you'll like it a lot if it's new to you.

If you're perverted try High School of the Dead

If you're perverted and like strong female leads try Kill la Kill

If you like strong female leads and you aren't perverted watch Psycho-Pass Season 1

Reason: Main thing is I think if you're looking for anime you probably are just looking for stuff to watch through the winter.

More light than heavy, ideally in 30 minute episodes

In that case, I'd recommend some of the more serious anime:

  • Monster: It's a thriller that follows a renowned brain surgeon that has his life flipped upside down. The story is fantastic and I always recommend it to anyone that hasn't watched it. There's no magic or fantasy elements, just suspense, drama and lots of emotion.
  • 91 Days: A story set during the Prohibition era in a fictional city. Follows a mobster whose sole motivation is avenging his family. Great story with great characters.
  • Baccano: Also set in the Prohibition era, but this time in Chicago. This ones follows about a dozen different characters that tell a fictional story based on real life events during the 1920's in Chicago. It does have some fantasy elements thrown in with part of the cast being immortal, but beyond that, it stays true to real life. The chaotic story telling is great, because as you see the events play out from multiple perspectives, what's happening starts to click and it comes together beautifully.
  • Steins;Gate: An eccentric college student, along with his friend, want to create a time machine. The story covers their attempts to do so and all of the weirdness they get into. Really great story and in a similar way to Baccano, things that you didn't catch before, start to make sense as the story comes together. Very great ride.

It's hard to find find any likable characters in monster. Most of them just arrogant assholes who just happened to know everything. Wait this seems really familiar

Black Lagoon.

The characters are canonically speaking English, so the dub actually works better than a sub.

It's much more American action movie tropes than anime tropes.

No weird stuff that some anime gets into, it's a Japanese businessman who falls ass-first into working with mercenaries on criminal island.
