why not just use latin instead of latine? Or even Hispanic (which technically doesnt include Brazilians, but then you can just say Hispanic and Brazilian or Luso)

Yeah that's what I was asking. And well the gender neutral word that's actually official is -latino, and regarding the pronunciation it's also the easiest one.

Latino is a male term. Hence the existence of the word Latina which is female. With gender roles and terms being such a big deal now people complained about Latino not being inclusive enough.

Its like saying hey guys to a group of people that isnt all guys, people want to be included.

The difference here is that we even polled this and a majority of Hispanic/Latino people don't like it. But yet... corporations keep using it like it's the politically correct term. You can go on Disney plus right now and see there's a Latinx section.

In addition to being Puerto Rican I have a lot of Mexican friends and I've asked them about the term and some didn't know about it but vehemently disapproved of it.

Is there somebody who prefers the term that's fine but they're a small minority.

I'm guessing the word was made up by a bunch of uppity women who decided to be offended on behalf of groups they don't represent

Sorry, I don't expect a significant bunch of men being at the forefront of championing this unnecessary stuff. It's usually women activists pushing it hard down other people's throat, they make up the majority of students churned out regurgitating it from universities.

Men might participate, but they sure as hell are not the majority thinking it's vital to tag an X at the end of an already usable word.

Latin Americans have a gender inclusive term of their own, latine. It flows much more naturally in conversation--especially in their native languages. So why don't you get with the program and use that instead of trying to force them to use some awkward term that United States academia came up with?

It doesn't. That's as much of a made up word as latinx and the pronunciation is just as awkward.

And (not that it's pronounceable or correct) but some people do actually write "amigx", "novix", etc as gender neutral of amigo, novio. Nobody says amigue or novie, and I've never heard of "latine" or "mexicane" either.

There is no argument. I mentioned that neither of those words are correct or legitimized. The gender neutral term is latino.

As mentioned, Latine has beeen growing in popularity among the millenial (activist) and generation z crowd and denying that runs the risk of being a "old man shouting at clouds" type. The Latin America LGBTQIA+ communities have been seeking out a gender neutral pronoun of their own in order to escape masculine or feminine suffixes.

And as mentioned, I have never heard of it, and:

Mr_hulk88 posted...

With the way language/inclusivity works "Latino" as a catchall doesn't work anymore for many individuals because being outside "male" or "female" requires it's own gender differentials. So people know they are outside the binary system.

I don't know what works for whom but once again, the term latino includes any gender.

Just the same as mexicanos, americanos, personas, amigos, muchachos, trabajadores, especialistas.
See? There are words (masculine, feminine, gender neutral) that are used as a general term to refer to people of any gender.

Replacing the final o with an e in the word latino can be (incorrectly) done as much as latinx, but the former isn't "easier" to pronounce in my language nor more popular than the latter.
If "latine" was accepted you would have to change every word that has a feminine and masculine variation in spanish but it would literally not work for some, for example seor and seora. The plural for seora, is seoras. The plural for seor is seores. So how would you know if you're talking about a group of males or a group of any gender?

The battle right now is whether this word should be Latine or Latinx. The correct answer in this case is to support Latine.

It's not.

The audacity of americans imposing distortions on my grammar is amusing though.

Further.. these are a good read:

I'm alright.

Like I said, I have never heard of the term before yesterday.

..Did you read at all the post you replied to?

Some have advocated just that but I'd also like to point out that many advocating for Latine aren't asking for it to replace Latino and Latina but to be used as a third addition to it.
..I am aware..And as I just mentioned, a third word isn't needed, because:

the term latino includes any gender.

Just the same as mexicanos, americanos, personas, amigos, muchachos, trabajadores, especialistas.
See? There are words (masculine, feminine, gender neutral) that are used as a general term to refer to people of any gender.

And also because:

If "latine" was accepted you would have to change every word that has a feminine and masculine variation in spanish but it would literally not work for some, for example seor and seora. The plural for seora, is seoras. The plural for seor is seores. So how would you know if you're talking about a group of males or a group of any gender?

La persona is a feminine word. As a guy, I don't have issue with not feeling represented when I say "soy una persona" lol, it's just gramatically how it works.
I have never hear any male or non female person taking issue with that either.

The point is there a plenty of words that don't indicate which sepcific gender you are and that's okay.

My entire statement was for people who aren't sure if they should use Latinx or Latine to please use latine.

And I am telling you that is incorrect and please don't.

Once again, (latin american) people do actually write "amigx", "novix", etc as gender neutral of amigo, novio. Nobody says amigue or novie.

When it was under observation. It has since been removed but campaigns to fight for it's inclusion haven't stopped.

Exactly. And you could do a read on why that was, which is essentially because of what I just explained.

Again, isn't just Americans. There was an entire feminist protest in Spain about a language reform with multiple proposals on how to go about it. This isn't just an "American" thing.

I didn't say the intent to change a word was an american thing.

I'm talking about the attitude of americans of lecturing other countries about their use of their own grammar when you (as shown) don't even care to understand why the change doesn't work.
